HTC 8xt GDR3 Update
Answered

Any news if the HTC 8XT will get the newly released Windows Phone OS update? Sprint just released it for the 8xt.

  • Hey Ryan,

The software updates are released over the air directly from Sprint. They normally should appear on devices within weeks after a release date so keep an eye out for software updates directly in your phone's settings.

  • Are we sure that this update will flow to Ting-powered phones? It is going on a month since Sprint released the update, and my 8XT still isn't seeing it.

  • Same here. Still not seeing it. For data and cellular service my phone says HTC rather than Sprint. Perhaps these phones are not syncing with Sprint?

  • Hey guys,

The phones do sync up with the Sprint network, and typically there is not too much of a delay in the updates, however with the most recent Andoid update (4.3) it did take a while to get to some customers. I'd be patient with this one. I imagine it won't be much longer.

  • Still waiting on this update. Wonder what the hold up is?

  • I'm not sure Ryan, but I can confirm with 100% certainty that it is not us.

Ting will never act as a bottleneck for a software upgrade. We're more like a toll bridge that keeps the gate up....and doesn't charge a toll. We're just there to look pretty :)

  • Owner of the above mentioned phone, bought directly from Ting. Still waiting, "patiently" for the GDR3 update. Curious to know if the HTC 8xt was discontinued. I dont see it offered on the your device page. And I wondered if it has something or anything to do with why we're not getting this update.

  • Hey JohnPaul,

The updates are rolled out in batches by Sprint so all we can advise at this point is that it is coming. The HTC 8XT is currently out of stock at the moment and does not reflect on our support of Windows devices.

  • My son's HTC 8XT has not yet received the update and he checks everyday.  Is there nothing else to do?

  • Hi John,

Unfortunately not. We are at the mercy of our network partner for these updates.

  • Soooo...it's four months later as of tomorrow, and Sprint-based 8XT phones received it back then...Ting, I love you with all my heart (really and truly, you guys are the coolest company around), but there HAS to be something weird going on with this particular update.  Any chance you can ring someone up on the Sprint side of the house to see what's holding the update up?  I know WinPhone isn't crazy popular, but it's simply not fair to those of us who look to these updates to keep our phones current/fresh.  I honestly don't think you guys are holding back the update, but something on the Sprint side of the house has to be causing this delay.  Thanks for listening to me whine.  Hope this gets resolved soon.

  • Hey Tim, I can inquire about this update and report back. The last we heard is that GDR3 was pushed out in October. You are correct that we do not interfere, step in, override, or modify any software update. We leave them be

  • Has anyone received Update 3 yet? I'm still waiting as well. I'm not blaming Ting for this, Sprint must be blocking it somehow. This is a small update so it's not a big deal, but Windows Phone 8.1 is coming soon and that one will be huge. I don't want to wait four months after release for that.

  • Brennan mentioned he would inquire about it and report back.  I'm nervous about this because the 8XT isn't being sold by Ting any longer (although it is still sold by Sprint).  Also, Sprint has an article that timestamps this update:

    http://support.sprint.com/support/article/Find_and_update_the_software_version_on_your_HTC_8XT/WServiceAdvisory_542_GKB54549

Brennan, is there some way that we Ting customers could engage Sprint regarding this?  I also am a huge supporter of Joseph's comment re: 8.1, which is going to be a much bigger deal.  Better to clear this jam out now, no?

  • No update yet on my son's 8XT.  Please help get to the bottom of this and make sure it does not happen with Microsoft's next update.

  • Hey Tim, our urgency for an update has been made with our network partner. Their customers are also affected. If you're looking to make some noise, which I think is a great idea, you can start knocking on Microsoft's door. That's the furthest up the food chain and the place where the software engineering will need to start before it makes it's way down to us.

  • Thanks for your response Brennan.  I guess my response to that would be that Sprint users have already received the update, so I think we're past the point of talking to Microsoft (we've already descended the food chain as it were).

Having said that, I enrolled my wife's HTC 8XT into the Preview For Developers program:

    http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/preview-for-developers/178ac8a1-6519-4a0b-960c-038393741e96

Just download this app, and you'll get the OS bits after your next phone update check.  It doesn't include the firmware from HTC, but most of the consumer-facing pieces will be available after that update (and you'll get the firmware as a separate download if this business ever gets sorted out).

Also, Sprint just announced that the Windows Phone 8.1 update will flow to all Sprint phones this summer:

    http://www.wpcentral.com/sprint-confirms-windows-phone-81-update-htc-8xt-and-samsung-ativ-s-neo

I don't know if, given the state of things with our Ting phones, this will include us, but my hope is some sort of renewed focus on Sprint's part may mean that we Ting users will become first-class citizens in their eyes.

Brennan, thanks for sending a flare up to Sprint on our behalf.  It's the right thing to do for your customers.

    Cheers all,

    Tim

  • It appears that the 8.1 update is going out to Sprint users.  Are there any thoughts on when or if Ting user will get the update? If I recall, Ting user never got the last major update from Sprint/HTC.

  • I have an idea, I don't think it's an original idea. But I thought if I discontinued TING and switched to Sprint, get the update, then back to TING.

  • JohnPaul, I thought about doing the same thing. Won't work with prepaid. It appears that they don't accept this phone. Not sure about their regular plans. i'd be willing to eat a months payment  and the hassle just to get the update.

  • Really, really want 8.1. I originally went in for the Developer Preview, but Microsoft stopped it for the 8xt due to driver issues. Tragic!

Now that it is being released for Sprint, hope is restored. But as of Jan. 1, the update is still not available. Two possibilities: (1) I still need to wait as it rolls out; (2) something about the Developer Preview is preventing my getting the real update.

So: any news out there? Anyone gotten the 8.1 update? I'd love some information to help me figure out my issues.

    Thanks!

  • Long story short, I used to have the Ting HTC 8XT and have just ordered the Sprint version with a Ting SIM.

I'll keep you updated if I can get the 8.1 update ... uh, updated. :)

  • I never received the GDR3 update that went to Sprint phones and went to the developer's preview to get 8.1. Unfortunately I got bit by the Wi-Fi bug which makes it quite a pain to use. I've received regular updates on the developer preview channel, but not the firmware upgrade that went out to Sprint in December. Turning developer preview on or off has no affect. I haven't seen any reports of a Ting HTC 8xt receiving any of the updates that have gone out over Sprint.

  • Used to have a Ting 8xt when it first came out. I needed a replacement so I ordered one from eBay that had been on Sprint. It came with 8.0 and I had to install the Developers Preview to get it to 8.0 GDR3.

Now I have unchecked the DP and still not getting any update for 8.1. So it appears that as soon as one of these phones is activated through an mvno it doesn't get the update.

Not sure what else to do. I love this phone - the weight, styling, camera- but I would love 8.1 so I can update my apps and use my sd card for app storage.

I'm looking forward to Ting's GSM debut! I'm currently eyeing the Lumia 1020 as a temporary phone until Windows 10 comes out. Plus, the 1020 can become a great digital camera after its use as a phone is no longer required.

  • Also, it is recommended that you uncheck the developer preview to get the Sprint 8.1 update.

  • Just sent a request to Sprint to see if they can help us Ting 8XT users. I will keep everyone posted.
