Does data count when connected to Wi-Fi networks?
Answered

We recently activated my kids iPhone 4. (email address removed)

We were connected to Wi-Fi all weekend. At one point she watched part of a Netflix show and used 113MB of data while connected to Wi-Fi.

Does this count toward our MB data usage? Looking at the dashboard it appears it does.

Is this normal operating? If we can't use Wi-Fi and not count that data, I think the Ting plans could get expensive very fast.

Thanks for clarifying.

  • Hi Wade,

Megabyte usage over a WiFi network is not counted towards your Ting bill. There can be a number of reasons as to why your device is coming up with some data usage over a mobile connection. I'm going to send you an email to discuss your account in detail.

  • The reason I love Ting is they are finally a provider that doesn't force me to buy a data plan just because I have a smart phone since I am around wi-fi almost all the time and don't need mobile data.  A couple of recommendations I have for you.  I want to keep my data at $0 all the time unless I'm traveling and want to enable it, so in the Ting dashboard, I have the internet disabled for my phone to make sure I don't accidentally use some.

If you do want to have it available but just not use it very much, I would recommend keeping the mobile data connection turned off except when you want to turn it on to use it for something.  All smart phones are set up to prefer a wi-fi connection instead of using mobile data if they are both turned on, but if it doesn't connect or you lose your wi-fi somehow, it will switch back over to mobile data, and you might not notice.  I would rather KNOW that my data is turned off unless I want to turn it on to use it.

  • All good points. My 11 year old had been using her "new to her" iPhone 4 on Wi-Fi only as her previous account hadn't been ported. So I know Wi-Fi was/is working. I just wanted to make sure that Wi-Fi data didn't count. I have showed her how to turn data off when at home on her phone. I do like the full control available for each device. I personally am ok with using "some" data. I don't like to feel rationed, but at the same time there is no need to use "unlimited" data. I think Ting will be the perfect middle ground. Thanks for the thoughts.

  • I wonder if its a iphone thing to accelerate downloads. I never had this issue with my droid but i just put my wifes iphone 4s on ting and sure enough i saw the data usage going. This was while connected to my home wifi. Shutting cellular data off and i will show my wife how to turn it on.

  • I'm having the same problem. I haven't used by my phone at my home, but I'm connected to Wi-Fi and I noticed that I'm seeing data usage. Can you please advise?
