Text messages that just say downloading
Answered

The text messages just say Message size: XXX KB, Expires on: Apr X, Downloading.  I have let it sit for a long time and it does not do anything.  I have tried to connect to the 3G and the WIFI, no difference.  Whats the deal?

  • Hi Aaron.  Try doing a carrier reset on you phone.  Make sure mobile data is on, WiFi off, then:

dial # # 7 2 7 8 6 #Enter your MSL (you can find this in your TIng account under 'device settings')

Press 'OK' or 'Reset' if prompted.

The phone should restart and go through a hands free activation.

When that completes, if you continue to have problems, open a support request with the details and we can troubleshoot further.

  • I have periodically had this problem. Presently, I have three "downloading" but nothing arrives. Is there a limit as to how many KB a text may contain before it won't post on the receiving phone?

My phone was reset some weeks ago, but this happened both before and after - it happens only part of the time, even while other texts seem to arrive without incident..

  • Hi Larry - Make sure that Data and Picture & Video Messaging is enabled on your online account, as well as on your device. Go to your Dashboard -> Device Settings -> Your Phone -> Scroll down to Megabytes : ensure that Can Access the Internet and Can Send & Receive Picture and Video Messages both are checked. Older messages that could not download may still have some trouble downloading (they may have expired on the network), new messages should come through with no further issues. Let us know in a Help Request if you continue to have trouble!

  • Hey Larry,

The Ting Tech helped my figure this out.  What happened to me was the phone I purchased was used and previously mod'ed.  I downloaded an app called SMS Go Pro (free app) and everything works fine now.  The Ting Tech said they could fix my phone to use the default message app but I like the SMS Go Pro.  Anyway, good luck with your problem.

    Regards,

    Aaron

  • Thanks Marg and Aaron. I am within WIFI range virtually all the time I am free to use my phone, so I have been keeping data turned off (although for some reason, my account shows a bit of data used recently, which I don't understand, as "Can Access the Internet and Can Send & Receive Picture and Video Messages" is unchecked, but that's another matter).  Q for Marg: if I enable those items on my dashboard will not my phone use MB, even though I may have a WIFI connection?

Q for Aaron: will SMS Go Pro work with WIFI alone, or does it need to have 3g or 4g enabled?

    Thanks again.

    LD

  • Hey Larry!  If you are connected to wifi, your phone will still access the data network for picture & video messaging - that's just the way most phones work for that particular function (as well as for voicemail notifications).  Other internet usage will go through the wifi and thus not be Ting data.

  • Thanks Aaron - I downloaded Go SMS and it WORKS! Money for nuthin' and my PICS for free.

Wendy, is this true, that the phone will still access the data network, even if I have "Can access the Internet, Allow other devices to tether to this device," and " Can send and receive picture & video messages" all unchecked?

I genuinely like having the ability to access data, but unless I am traveling, I see it as superfluous. When traveling, it is sweet, but otherwise I don't want my phone shaking hands with strangers all over the place;-).

I think my having those unchecked is why I could not download pics - but GO SMS fixed that. Now, with GO SMS I can't see any advantage to having a data connection if I am in WIFI range - am I missing something?

  • Hi Karen - if they are unchecked, you will not get data charges.  I was speaking about if they are checked, but the device is connected to wifi.  Hope that helps!
