If I purchased a Lumia 635 and had it unlocked, would it work for Ting?
Answered

I'm looking at buying a no-contract Lumia 635 and then getting the Unlock code from AT&T.  Is that device compatible with TING once unlocked?

  • Hi Matthew,

We support Sprint branded devices found on our supported devices list. As much as we would like to, we are not able to activate AT&T devices since they are not compatible with Sprint's CDMA network.

  • The Lumia 635 is a Sprint / Boost / Virgin phone according to this, if we could get something like the 635 or HTC M8 One I would switch to Ting as I am very happy with the service I have on my other 2 phones.

  • Sprint blocks BYOD of phones until they have sold them for a year.

According to the article posted, you may be able to BYOD in February 2016. (I allowed a bit of time for Ting to test first.)

  • Not trying to be argumentative but the Sprint won't unlock the phone for a year explanation does not explain how they got the HTC M8 (One) or Galaxy S5 (Androids already on sale on tings site) since it they came out about 6-7 months ago.  I understand that Windows phones are not he most popular of platform currently and there has to be a bang for buck to adopt us:)

I understand and we will just have to wait no biggie.  Just dislike it sometimes when we are pinned to just the popular phones.  Hopefully Windows phone will become popular enough someday to warrant some more attention:)

  • sprint does not unlock their *network* to permit the phones for BYOD for a year. Sprint only allows the ESN's they sell, either directly or to their MVNOs.

Ting buys their phones from Sprint, so Sprint allows them on Ting's network They only (in theory, at least) only allow them to work on Ting's network and not on Sprint or another MVNO.

  • Microsoft is selling unlocked 635's now:)  I wonder if I bought one and tried to get it hooked up would it be worth a try or should I wait?  I really want a functional Windows phone on Ting so I can remove my high monthly charges.

Again not trying to be a bother just curious.

  • The unlocked Microsoft Lumia 635 should run fine on Ting's new GSM service. But you could also buy the T-Mobile version of the 635 for GSM service and save some money. Amazon sells the T-Mobile version for $99 and occasionally discounts it as low as $65.

  • Any help...  I bought a nokia lumia 635 unlocked from microsoft store.  I also bought a new sim card for the beta GSM service... After I installed the ting sim card the phone screen states:  "This device is locked to a specific mobile operator. Contact your mobile operator for the unlock code. 10 attempts remain"

    Any help?

  • I am confused. You bought an unlocked phone from the Microsoft store and the phone says it is locked. Why did you not contact the Microsoft store for assistance?

Ting does not manufacture or sell that phone What would you expect Ting to do about it? Ting cannot unlock phones.

  • It does not sound like you received the unlocked version of the Lumia 635 from the Microsoft.  Best bet would be to return to the Microsoft Store with your Ting SIM card and ensure they get you an unlocked phone.  Or return that phone and purchase the T-Mobile version of the Lumia 635 .

  • I would return the phone without the Ting SIM card.

You could then use the Ting SIM card in the T-Mobile version.
