Dear Hacker friends: Vero's are out of stock / discontinued

To our hacker friends within the community...

I'm sorry to report that we're out of stock on the Sanyo Vero feature phone and will not be receiving any more of these devices into inventory.

Our next closest replacement will be the Samsung M370 (with a price point of ~$70).

  • Any chance of you selling just the ESN with the MDN and the two codes? Sometimes it's good not to have to buy a phone...

  • I ordered one ( Sanyo Vero) This weekend, does that Mean I will get the M370 instead?

  • I would love for you to get another simple phone like the Vero.  The Samsung M370 is the same price, but it has too many buttons for people that like simple phones.

I just showed the one I have to my Aunt that is in her 70s and she really liked it...I may have to give it to her and get the M370 instead as a donor...

  • A very basic sub-$25 phone would be a nice addition.

  • Alright, thank goodness you guys are getting the Samsung M370!

I was a bit dismayed to see the Sanyo Vero went missing, as I was about to switch my parents over in the next two months.

  • Two things:

    1. What happened that Vero's were discontinued?

    2. For those of us that do have Vero's, what does that mean for us, if anything?

  • Any idea when we will be able to order the Samsung M370 on the website?  We'll be wanting to put my mother-in-law on a basic phone, and the Brio is just not a good choice for her.

  • What a shame. Now what will people use as a donor phone...

BTW Ben, what is your email? I might be interested in reviewing one of the new feature phones.

  • Why is everyone ignoring the availability of the Kyocera Brio? The Sanyo Vero is MADE by Kyocera, says right on the back of the phone and at startup.

I know everyone used the Sanyo Vero as a donor, myself included, but will the Kyocera Brio not work as a donor phone? I need another one to get my wife switched over.

  • ^^^^ That's pretty much the main issue at this point. No one knows if either of the new phones will work as donors. I've got what I think might be the necessary information to make it work, but I've also got a perfectly working setup right now using a Vero and can't see dropping $75 bucks on a Brio just for kicks (That's a alot of beer money!).

  • Sure is...I found one poor guy in another thread who got the Brio and he can't read the secret passwords for the data profiles. So I think I'll hold off until the Samsung M370 drops. I'm ASSUMING it will work, since my Boost Mobile donor phone was a Samsung M520...

Personally, I can't get data working on my HTC Incredible with my Vero info, but I'm going to try again tonight. Got voice and texts working, so that's at least a positive!

  • Hello Ben Lucier,

I am also curious when the Samsung M370 will be available.  I would be interested in using that one as a donor phone since the Vero is discontinued.

    Thank you!

  • Bump for an update, and wondering if the Ting team was able to connect to the M370 and read the pertinent info that is reportedly hidden on the Kyocera Brio. (SA and AAA shared passwords I think)

  • Michael: The Vero's were end of life... it can happen pretty quick with phones. The Vero's had already been out for a while too. Nothing wrong with them... they're great little phones. Manufacturer just stopped making them. As for those who already have a Vero, we'll continue to support them, no troubles there.

Sam: I'll email you right now...

Joe / Tonya / Joseph / Jason: It's hard to estimate when the M370s will be here with any sort of accuracy, so I just won't. What I can tell you is that we're pushing really really hard to work through some of our inventory challenges to minimize future delays.

    Thanks all!

  • Ben, I am reading through all topics and amazed at your service [Hats off to you] and dedicated effort to help us, the customers. I have started switching -- I am one of three. Started with Brio, thinking it will be easy to port -- but apparently not, so stuck with it until I find out another replacement [feature phone]. Also, I cannot wait to transfer two of my other lines to ting, the problem is, I have the target phones ready [up to our likings] and do not want to spend too much money getting another set of expensive phones. I know this is unrealistic expectation but I am checking few times every day if another feature phone [M370?] is added to the inventory or someone wants to sell their used vero. So far, I have received one used vero but I need two more. I am wondering when it would be available again... Thanks much for for your help. Keep it up Ben !!

  • It's frustrating that there is no flip feature phone. I want to order 2 for visually challenged folks (Mother and father-in-law :) but can't order the Brio---the tiny keys would make my mother cuss

  • Hi,

We have had upstream supply issues with flip feature phones, sorry for the inconvenience! We are working as hard as we can to get them back into stock, and we expect we will be able to offer the Samsung M370.

Thanks for taking the time to write.

  • Scott, do you have a rough time-frame for the M370?

  • I'm wondering less about a release date for the Samsung M370 and more if this phone has been/will be tested at Ting HQ with the 'hacker tools' (DFS, CDMA Workshop, QPST) to verify the SA and AAA passwords are accessible. I would venture to say that they are, since my donor phone on Boost was a Samsung M520. Same manufacturer, same "M" line of phones...who knows though. Hopefully this can be confirmed by Ting for those of us looking for a donor phone and no one else has to waste $70 only to find out it can't be used as a donor, like Nirapada :(

And it does seem that there is an otherwise moderate-high demand for feature phones on Ting, this could be a really great alternative to the $0.10/min & more prepaids for people who don't want/need smartphones that exist now, like Net 10 and Tracfone.

  • Yeah, I am waiting for flip phones as well for my parents.  Their Sprint contract ends on June 28th.  Ting is absolutely perfect for people who just use talk.

  • For someone who actually wants a telephone instead of an all-purpose device, the Vero is great. I got one for our parents and they can see and push the number buttons. Unfortunately I also got a Brio to try out. I say "Unfortunately" because it is very difficult to use to make a telephone call unless you already have the number in memory. It is not too hard to push the small buttons on the Brio once you find them - but finding/reading the number buttons in a low-light location is impossible except by trial and error. Doubly so for anyone without perfect eyesight. (Note: the letters on the keys are white and easily visible; the numbers are printed dark green next to the letters, invisible against the black key background without daylight or a flashlight.)

  • I already got my mom a vero to see how everything would work out. She likes it and most importantly it hasnt put much of a dent in my wallet, but my dad needs a flip phone too. Hope the samsung m370 comes out soon so I can get him switched over from sprint. The last piece of the puzzle would be you guys and gals getting the samsung s3 then I would switch :)

  • Any other feature phones coming other than the m370?

  • Ting already lists 2 feature phones on their devices page. I expect they are limited by Sprint in their shoice of devices,. I also do not think Ting has found a money tree to finance a wide inventory selection.

Ting staff, feel free to correct me if you have found a money tree.

  • Hi, we have not found the elusive money tree,  but we are in a strong financial position, and are keen to offer the right device mix to serve our customers, and prospective customers.

I expect the next device update will have more information about devices in the lower end of the spectrum  that will be coming soon. I have reasons to believe that we will see more devices in this category in the fall.

I would be very interested in hearing about any feedback you have around how the M370  does not meet your needs.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Scott,

I just pre-ordered the M370 and will be using it as a "donor phone" to flash my Sprint Evo 4G onto the Ting service.

Looking forward to getting it in the mail!

    This fits my needs perfectly.

I will also be sharing the M370 phone with my parents and in-laws (as a basic to phone) to see if they are interested in "saving money with Ting"!

    Thanks...

  • Joe,

if you use the M370 as a donor phone, you cannot use it on the Ting network after you clone its identity to your Evo 4G.,

You realize that since the M370 does not have 4G, when you clone it to your Evo, the Evo will not have 4G network access either,
