Adding 'helpful hacking' details in your Device Settings page

Hey folks,

We're making some changes to our Device Settings pages and we thought it might be more helpful to include certain phone specific details that help facilitate hacking.

The obvious piece of info is the Master Services Lock (ie MSL). Is there anything else you think we could include that would be helpful to those hacking their devices?

Let us know!

  • Thant's great - thanks for adding this! Most of the other information can be obtained pretty easily, but it couldn't hurt to put it all in one spot:

    MDN (phone number)

    MSID

    MEID

  • Scott / Mark, thanks for your suggestions... we're going to make sure these get added in an upcoming release. Also,  I think Jared had a good suggestion about adding model numbers in his thread here: https://help.ting.com/entries/21548121-model-numbers-on-device-detail-page

  • Ben, is that at all possible to add "HA and AAA" secrets to the device page and the ALL IP addresses for the profiles ? That will make our/hacker's life much easier.

  • The IP addresses don't really change between devices, so you could just copy them from someone else's guide.

The HA shared is always just 'secret'

I'd also imagine there is no easy or perhaps possible way to have the AAA secrets shown like that... but I'm open to being pleasantly surprised.

  • Samual, looks like you have more info than what I know.  AAA secrets are per device, right ? Why can't this be shown ?

  • Ting is very open to sharing that information with us, the issue isn't that... It's that Sprint won't share that information with Ting - or at least hasn't at this point. I am willing to be optimistic with Samuel...

  • The AAA secret codes are generated each time a device is activated. Just giving them out defeats the whole purpose of the secret codes.

  • (for those of us with phones that don't have the 'update profile' and 'update PRL' options)

  • My comment is not really related to hacking, but more for users with multiple Ting phones.

When you activate a phone, you set a descriptive name for the phone. When you have multiple phones, the Ting dashboard only identifies the phone by its phone number, The descriptive name does not appear anywhere that I have found. It is much easier to remember Name's Phone than it is to remember their cell phone number. Perhaps this could be a user selectable option.

  • Bruce, in the dashboard you can access the settings page for each device. Once in the settings you can then rename the phone to whatever you want. (it should be at the top of the page just to the right of "Settings: Name of device")

  • Thanks, Brian

I did not see that link. It still seems strange that when you activate it asks for that information and then does not use it on the dashboard.

  • Ben,

Although not hacking detals, adding HAC (hearing aid compatibility) numbers would be helpful. It would also be good to state if there are not numbers available.

I have the HTC Detail, and I assume it is rated M4/T3. since the page at  http://www.htc.com/us/about/hearing gives those numbers for the HTC EVO Shift 4G.

More information on Hearing Aid Compatibility can be found at  http://www.fcc.gov/guides/hearing-aid-compatibility-wireless-telephones

  • I like Joey's idea of links to the most recent PRL! Very useful for those of us flashin Verizon phones.

I think it would be great to have some "hacking" (Is this technically phreaking since it relates to phones? The lines are so blurred these days ;) ) information on the actual pre-purchase product descriptions.  Maybe a separate tab that lists what capabilities have been confirmed for it as a donor as well as a link to a write up on how to pull all of the information you need from that specific phone. This would allow people who are less sure of their capabilities to look over the process and decide if it is something they are comfortable getting into or if they should just spend the extra money on a different donor or a Ting phone that has all the features they want.

  • We'll be adding more information to device pages with the launch of the new Dashboard in the next few weeks.

I'm not sure we can link to PRLs but we'll look into that and see what we can do.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

  • Could all of the above be added to the appropriate tab in the app, please?

    Thanks!
