Get MSL from (some) Samsung Phones

Here is how you can get the MSL on a Samsung Epic 4G. This process may work on other phones too.

  1. Install the free Android Terminal Emulator from Google Play.

  2. At the CLI prompt, type "getprop ril.MSL" (no quotes, note the capital letters).

The number returned is the MSL (master subscriber lock) code for that phone. This can be used for advance programming of the phone, such as Ting's upcoming BYOSD.

This process will likely work on other phones. It does not work on my Ting HTC Detail, though.

  • Thanks for sharing!

    I am preparing a Nexus S 4G.

  • Just wanted to add that if it doesn't work (or it seems to just return no answer immediately), go into the ##DATA# menu where it asks for your MSL, punch any code in and let it give you an error, and then switch back to the terminal app and try the above command again. I had to do this on my Galaxy SIII to get it to actually show the MSL code correctly.

  • I tried this as well as aLogcat and neither worked :(  I'm trying to bring my phone number from Verizon over on a Sprint phone I purchased.  The phone number was moved so now my old phone won't work and neither will my new phone.  What can I do?!?

  • Sonja,

You probably should call Ting support or email help@ting.com to open a ticket and get individual support.

  • Ting will give it to you, also they told me you should be able to get it when you log into your ting account. I am having issues with not getting signal and they gave me mine so i can reset my phone to see if it helps.

  • Hey Rachel,

Exactly, the MSL is located right in your Ting account. Log in -> Select the "Device Settings" tab -> select your phone number and the MSL is located right on the left side of the page under the device image.

Fingers crossed the resets you've tried with Sam should work to get you up and running :)
