UnHack and BYOD

I have a Samsung Epic 4G that was brought to Ting a long time ago via Samsung Reclaim donor.  The donor doesn't have MMS and wife wants MMS working so I want to unhack the Epic and then byod it back in.  All that is fine and dandy except I don't have all the original settings with me.  I am in the process of moving an most of my belongings are in storage which includes screenshots of the original settings of the phone.  I have never gotten the Epic to do a profile or prl update since the hack.  Never really cared though.

Is there a way to put the phone in a state that will allow the activation to assign new HA and AAA so that I don't have to know the original ones?

Can I go into Sprint and play stupid and have them "fix" all the setting via tools and info I don't have?

I remember having trouble reading all the profile info from the reclaim but once everything I needed worked I quit trying so I think that is why prl updates are not working.  Profile 0 must have bad info.

Any assistance or direction from you guys (and gals) would be appreciated.

  • Just restore the original MEID, clear out all profile and MDN/MIN settings, do a BYOD activation with Ting, and then do a data profile reset. Should work like a charm, the data profile reset restores the original profile 0 keys back on the phone and lets it activate OTA again. I did this with an EVO 4G just a couple weeks back after being in exactly the same situation (MEID cloned the phone over, didn't save data profile keys) and it worked without a second thought.

Data profile reset: ##72786# (then follow the steps to do a full data profile reset/restore, etc). Reboot, then, if it still doesn't activate, do ##DATA# (##3282#) restore/reset then reboot and it should activate.

One potential caveat, you'll probably have to be on the stock OS to get the ## numbers to work. Also, the ##xxx# format is for HTC phones, I'm not sure if it's the same for the Samsung Epic 4G. Just play around with it or google to get the right format

  • Keith,

I do not know f this will help, but when I performed a Factory Reset on my Epic 4G, the MMS URL reverted to the factory setting. If you have the phone backed up with ClockworkMod or similar, you may want to try that route.

After I performed the factory I needed to re-enter the Ting MMS settings again.

So restore MEID and pESN.  When you say "clear out" is that wipe them blank or pad with zeros?  Do I touch ANY other settings?  I already restored it to factory OS.  I can always redo the OS later.

    @Bruce

I did a factory reset after reverting to stock OS.  I think that only effects OS settings and not carrier settings.  I could be wrong, but it didn't help it OTA activate.  Thanks for the input.

  • Keith,

Ryan had the correct idea. Sorry, I mis-remembered. You need your MSL for this. If you do not have that, you can either get it from Ting or, from a terminal on the phone type "getprop ril.MSL" without the quotes. That will give you the MSL for your device.

Ryan's code triggers an automatic activation.Ting support had me do that when I changed phone numbers on my Epic 4G. I just tried it again and it did not reset the MMS URL. Perhaps Ting added that to my phone profile.

  • Thanks.  I changed all my MSLs to 000000 so I didnt have to find/remember them.  I will give this a shot.  Wife's phone so wish me luck.

  • I found something else that looked promising ##rtn#.  It looked good and rebooted but still no go.  It might be a lost cuase.  I think Sprint can fix it but not sure Ting will have access.  I already went through the byod process on it because I thought it would do a esn check and confirm before it started.  On that note Ting should probably put some sort of safeguard there.  If I get someone's esn form a forum and put it in it will break their service.  Fun, but not good for Ting.  Anyways, I am not sure where to go from here.  I may have to have ting push my phone back to Sprint and then I call Sprint for an activation and see if they can fix it.  Not really sure what the options are if the AAA is lost to profile 0.

I wonder if Ting has access to "Open Mobile Alliance Device Manager".  If there were a way to get the XML response from it about my phone I could manually enter the info.

  • I was able to get my MSID.  WIth that and the MDN I can now make and receive calls.  Problem is profile 0 doesn't have the right HA and AAA so I can't profile update or PRL update.  Not really sure if there is a solution.

  • Is there any way I can get that information off my phone to help you, or is that part of the phone identity?

  • If you believe this post: http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/98776 then a factory reset will restore the original 3G profile. I don't know if there's any way to reset the data profile without that, but it might be worth a shot.

  • I have tried all sorts of reset etc.  There is one thing I haven't tried yet but no time today.  I want to install Kies (by samsung) and see if by chance it will collect the settings and push them to the phone via usb vs over the air.  I might be able to take it into a Sprint store IF the phone weren't moved to Ting already AND I had an active Sprint account.  To much headache.  It's really not the end of the world like it is.  Wife can't MMS and Profile/PRL updates give auth error.  I'll try the Kies thing when I get a chance and then just use it like it is or sell it as a boost hack.
