Good Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch ROM?

Can anyone suggest a good solid Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch ROM (SPH-D710)?

I moved my wife's SPH-D710 over from Sprint a while back. I'd like to put an ASOP ROM on it. I've looked around XDA and found a few. I tried a few and they kept rebooting so I flashed back to stock.

I'm running CM 10.1 on my GNex, and we ran CM7 on our Evo's before. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's a solid CM build for the SPH-D710, as far as I can tell.

Anyone running a solid ROM on their SPH-D710?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • I have been running PACman for quite some time on the epic 4g touch.  It is so damn smooth and solid.    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050948  Just for right now, make sure you get the 6/13/2013 release, there are a couple issues with icon rendering in the VERY latest one.  It is an issue with more recent CM 10.1 changes though, and is being worked on.

Couple other very popular ones for this phone are Rootbox and Slim Bean.  If you would like a rooted, but more vanilla experience akin to a Nexus style phone from google, try out SuperNexus :)

  • I just ordered a gs2 and I would really like to try out supernexus. I have not rooted or installed a rom before, I only rooted an htc evo a very long time ago only from a website to get wifi hotspot enabled on the phone, that was it. But I do have a good idea to work it out. I hope it wont affect ota updates from the phones own software to get unrooted. I just need the right pages to follow through. I did read up a few things on xdas site, but its still a little back and fourth. I dont like touchwiz at all and I really do like pure android on my phone. Any help would be great. Thank you.

  • Well the good thing about OTA updates, is the best of the changes end up working their way in to most ROMs anyway.  We have been very fortunate with some great Jellybean leaks too.

Let me know when you have your phone.  I would be more than happy to help you safely do what you need to get working with SuperNexus.  I tried that one out, and it is a fantastic experience.  I like the advance customization of something like PACman, but would happily recommend SuperNexus for a great experience on this phone.

Just two things to keep in mind if you go off on your own with it.  One is making sure you get a safe recovery on your the phone.  There was an issue with ICS recoveries corrupting part of the phones ROM bricking it but that is not an issue anymore so long as you get the right recovery installed first.

The other one is to make sure you are installing things for the Epic 4g Touch.  That is the Sprint branded version of the Galaxy S2.  If you go to the Galaxy S2 section on XDA, those ROMs will not work properly on the Sprint version.

  • Over the weekend I installed this ROM on my wife's phone.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099881

I perosnally like it because it's based on CyanogenMod 10.1 which is what I'm running on my Galaxy Nexus. We had one issue with the video camera force closing. Other than that it's been pretty solid. I'm also very interested in SuperNexus. I'll see how the current ROM works out over the next few weeks. If there are any issues we may try SuperNexus.

I installed agat recovery (Basically ClockworkMod for SPH-D710). I felt better having a recovery on the phone rather than having to flash and boot into a safe kernel recovery.

You're right about there being a lot of ROM's for the other Galaxy branded S2's. I found searching by the model number SPH-D710 really helped.

  • Hey thanks for your help, I will let you know as soon as i get it. Should I also port my sprint number over first and activate the phone. It wont matter to me, its no rush. Thanks again.

  • No problem at all! And no worries Brook ;) We all have our kid/cat moments lol

I would do all the porting/activation before any custom ROM installs. JUST flashing a ROM won't effect your service, but there are some dialpad codes that do no work on some ROMs for this phone (basically any non TouchWiz based ROM like CM or AOSP).

Also if you flash a new modem, you HAVE to go back to stock for the OTA PRL update.

Thankfully all ROMs either have a safe AGAT or CWM or TWRP recovery that is safe.  Basically the "brick" issue is long past, so you can flash away safe!

    So far as ROMs,  http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1281

Any from there are fine.  That is the D710 (Epic 4G Touch) section of XDA, and it is a highly active section.  Everything there is for this specific phone.

If anybody needs any help with this stuff, feel free to PM me on XDA forums.  I am Eigokyoukan on there, and would be glad to help.

  • Got one of these phones yesterday, so much more choice for roms than my old slow transform ultra.   Looking at likely trying super nexus or cyanogen mod.  Havent rooted it (yet) but I am curious about the need for an ICS modem when flashing?  keep seeing that in threads but this phone is already on jb 4.1.2, do I need to worry about the ICS modem at all?

  • Paul, if you are going to use an AOSP based type ROM such as super nexus or CM/PA/AOKP/ect... you'll need to be an ICS/GB modem. You can just flash the modem zip right after you flash the ROM of your choice. However, if you decided to jump back to a JB TW based ROM, you'll need to be on a JB modem. I know its confusing that if you flash CM10.1 (jelly bean) that you have to be on an ICS/GB modem. The devs haven't figured out to get mobile data working on JB modems yet when you run AOSP based ROMs.  When I had the S2, I was running Slimbean for the longest time. Very stable and great battery life. On my wife's phone, since she likes stock, I put on TBSGS4 for her.

  • so the summarize:

any TW jelly bean ROM = JB modem

any AOSP based ROM = GB/ICS modem

any TW ICS or GB ROM = GB/ICS modem

  • Good to know.

I'll be rooting tomorrow or the weekend, when i get chance.  I tend to favor the straight up android like you get on the nexus devices.  No bloatware, which is why I am thinking super nexus or cyanogenmod.  Have been looking through the lists there are so many more roms for this phone I'm liable to wind up reflashing every week or so till i find a favorite.  Have flashed tablets with JB before, this'll be the first phone.

  • That's exactly how I felt. I've flashed so many ROMs in the two years I had the phone, it was ridiculous. It was my first android phone and I learned so much from that phone.

Just note, that while on AOSP, dialer codes and profile/PRL updates won't work. But If you search for "EL29 temp boot", there's a way to boot into a stock ROM temporarily to update profile/PRL or get a GPS lock... then when you reboot the phone, you can just dirty flash your AOSP ROM and you won't lose any data.

  • That sounds problematic, since I know flashing will wipe the mms settings. guess I'll have to investigate that

  • you don't need to do a profile/PRL update to update the MMS settings. You can just edit the APN's and restart the phone and be good.

The only reason to update profile/PRL was if you were having some mobile data issues or if you are trying to activate the phone. Once you do the initial profile/PRL update on the stock ROM, it should be set no matter what you flash.

  • you said that dialer codes don't work, were you not referring to the ones where you dial ##somenumbers#  ?  Since you need to be able to do that to get to mmsc setting

  • Sorry, I should've explained that there's a way to edit the APN settings on AOSP with out the dialer codes. Refer to this thread:

  • The instructions there leave out an important step. Once you change the MMSC URL, you need to press the menu button on the phone and save the entry for the settings to stick.

  • Ahhhhhh  well that helps a lot.

Only question left now, and I am sure I would discover as I went along is....

any issues with super nexus (2.0 rather than 3.0 since I have read problems on 3 already) or CM 10.1 or maybe slim since I have been looking, that you know of?

  • I never ran super nexus before, but I switched between CM10.1 and Slim a lot before deciding on Slim. The last time I had the phone was back in July and I didn't have any issue with both ROMs. People reported that capturing videos on instagram and vine don't work, but that's just a general video bug with any AOSP ROM. As far as everyday functionality, texting, MMS, calls, voicemail, camera, 3G, bluetooth, WIFI, ect... I never encountered any problems.

  • New Ting member.  I have 2 of these Samsung S2 Epic 4g Touch phones and am now using this rom(fast and works nicely):

    cm-10.1-20131103-NIGHTLY-d710.zip

    from here:  http://get.cm/?device=d710

I used these instructions to backup original Samsung rom, then flash new one:
