A way to increase data antenna "power" on Samsung Galaxy Note 2?

I successfully fixed the weak Wifi signal I was having on my Note 2 by turning of the "Wifi Power Save Mode". So far I am getting better wifi signal throughout my house. (*#0011#, Menu, Wifi) Granted, it's not a huge improvement but it's noticeable.

So that got me wondering: Is there anything similar that I can adjust to increase the cellular/data signal? Since my upgrade from the LG Optimus V (Virgin Mobile) to the Note 2, I've been losing all signal more frequently. Supposedly the Note 2 is a very powerful and advanced piece of equipment (or so it seems), so I find it hard to believe that it's anything more than a software configuration problem.

  • Well, there are a couple things you can try out... one way less in depth than the other.  First I do want to ask if you are on a custom ROM or on the stock software for Galaxy Note 2?

You could just be connecting to a tower that is not best for you.  You can use apps like network signal refresh ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atejapps.networksignalrefresher&feature=related_apps#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwOSwiY29tLmF0ZWphcHBzLm5ldHdvcmtzaWduYWxyZWZyZXNoZXIiXQ..) to basically restart your cell connection and attempt to connect to a better tower.  You can also use OpenSignal to get info about the network in your area ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.staircase3.opensignal&hl=en)

If that doesn't solve your issue, then it can get a little more in depth. And also very warranty voidy and not for feint of heart or inexperienced.

In a nut shell there a couple other things that would effect your speeds and how you connect to towers.  One is the software that controls the modem.  Sometimes (as on my device) there is a modem firmware that works better in certain areas or for certain uses than the one installed by default.  Updating the modem firmware can drastically (for better or worse) effect your network connectivity.

The other is to update or use a different PRL.  The PRL is "Preffered Roaming List" and it is basically a list of towers your phone gives preference to.  Since Ting does not (AFAIK) support data roaming at this time, it could be that your phone is by default trying to access towers you cannot roam to and suffering from it.  Changing your PRL literally tells the phone to connect to different towers in different orders of preference.

These last two things are NOT suggested for an average user though.  They WILL void any warranty you may have, and shouldn't be done unless you know what you are doing or you have someone who can help out.

  • I still have stock software on my phone.

Thanks for the great info. I think I'll start with the 2 apps you suggested and see if those help.
