Unofficial Android App

I have created an unofficial Ting Usage app for Android. It's up on the Play Store: http://l.3dgo.net/KGqN9N

Features

  • See overall usage and costs for the current billing cycle
  • See detailed usage information for the entire account
  • See overall usage for each device
  • See detailed usage information for each device

Detailed usage information is cached so if you want to see the most recent information, you will need to hit the refresh button.

Any feedback and such can be posted here.

Important Note

  • This works by scraping the account pages to pull usage information, so it will not save you any data compared to just visiting the site in a browser. Also, if Ting updates their site, it will probably break until I have a chance to fix it. I saw in another thread that they will be making usage downloads available so I will probably shift to using those when that happens. And if Ting ever releases a proper API that may allow for considerably more functionality.

  • I have an appearance comment. Due to the colors used, I also initially misread the usage meters. When usage is over 50% in a bucket, the usage number is inside the blue line. Perhaps the text should change to black The eye is drawn to the Average number below the colored bar.

     

    Thank you again for a great app. Ting should hire you and provide resources for an official version.

    Bruce: Are your meters blue? Mine are yellow. I may have to see if I can force the color. I'll put some thought into it.

  • The minutes are now matching.

     

    It seems that the phone needs to be shutoff and restarted (power reboot, just like microsoft ) to get the minutes on the bottom to match the minutes up top (refresh wasn't enough)

    Actually, my minutes fixed on their own without a reboot and now match. Perhaps Ting made some adjustment on the new dashboard.

     

    i sen Brian a screenshot of my meters. I suspect the color varies depending on the theme settings on the phone.

  • I just checked my app. I used more minutes from yesterday. The summary appears to not have updated. I collected a screenshot & dashboard source. I will email that info to Brian later today.

  • Updated the test version again. Hopefully with a fix for the devices not updating. Also a couple of visual tweaks.

  • Just got the update in the Play Store. works great scraping the new dashboard, and the "Next bill" feature is really great!

     

    I have another suggestion - can you add a current bill subtotal? to the bottom of the app maybe?

    Just add up the Minutes/Messages/Megabytes dollar amounts, and then add ($6 x n of devices)?

  • Brian - I actually noticed upon launching the app, the cache is not cleared and the dashboard is not updated, even though I see the "Fetching information from Ting" message and then the "Working message".

    Then I hit the refresh button in the app and I see "Fetching information from Ting" then "Working" then **"Clearing cached information" **and THEN the dashboard is updated. Shouldn't it be doing this when the app is launched to reduce redundancy?

  • Joey - It doesn't automatically clear the cache on launch anymore as the dashboard page it scrapes is now much larger than it used to be.

  • Just joined up with Ting last a few days ago and knew there had to be a tracking app.  Found it and the forum posts here. Have to give Brian a pat on the head. Great app, thanks for all the work. I'm hope Ting puts something in your Christmas Stocking.

  • I just posted an update to the app. You should see it in the next couple of hours.

    The key features in this update are:

    • Setting to auto update on launch
    • Improved caching
    • Hopefully fixed some memory issues.

     I downloaded your app last night. It loaded fine, but then my phone acted funny. I restarted the phone and the app worked fine. Thanks! Oh, my phone is a Transform Ultra.

  • I just submitted a new version of the app to the store. It should be live in a couple of hours. This version was a somewhat frantic rework to support the changes to the new dashboard. I'm not sure sms reporting will work right as I don't use that feature from Ting. If it doesn't, let me know and I will troubleshoot.

    First, Thank you very much for the update! 

    Just downloaded the latest version.

    Data and minutes appear to be working good.

    However, SMS is not displaying properly. The main page shows 1181 messages, but when I click on details, it says "There is no reported usage in this billing cycle".

    Let me know if you need anything else that will be helpful.

  • The app is great! However, besides the absence of text message details, I am also seeing a glitch with the minutes details. The "To" field says "null" for any phone number except the ones that are associated with my Ting devices.

  • J Mendez: Using the data you sent, I may have fixed the issues with SMS and outgoing calls.

    I pushed a new release to the market, but if anyone wants to install it immediately you can get it from the dropbox link in the original post.

  • Brian: I uninstalled and reinstalled the app (twice), but I still get the same behavior--all non-Ting numbers are listed as "null" in the "Minutes" details, and "There is no reported usage in this billing cycle" in the "Messages" details. Version 2.5 is the latest, right?

  • I cannot seem to get the dropbox link to work on my phone. How long will it take the store to update? No rush really, just curious. Thanks again for making this app available to the Ting community!
