Unofficial User Forum

I'm just curious if anyone would be interested in an unofficial user community/forum. I have experience running vbulletin forums and like the sense of community that they can bring but I'm not sure if there are even enough people that would be interested to keep it from just being a ghost town.

Would any of you be interested? Would you even have enough to talk about to show up more than once? Are you happy enough with these official forums?

Ok, done with the questions :P

Edit: Decided to do it, there might be quite a few people out on the net that are interested but not on these official forums.

  • Hi Kevin,

I follow other technical forums like XDA Developers, but I am not familiar with "vbulletin".

Can you provide some examples of those forums?

    Thanks

Here are my preliminary thoughts on a separate forum:

    Pros:

    - a more robust forum tool that allows for editing posts, "Thanks", etc

    Cons:

    - I becomes harder to get your answers because there is more than one place to go searching for.  These Ting forums are easy to get to and are monitored/responded by Ting support.

Also, I also read in these forums that they are working with the vendor on upgrading these forums.

Let's see what others in this community say.

  • vbulletin is the software, not the specific website but it basically just means what you mentioned... a full featured forum with all of the addons and hacks, etc. Similar to XDA Developers but I don't believe they actually use the same software.

  • I was thinking we should have a subreddit?

  • subreddit would be cool but it still requires the original post to point to a page on the web, right? If someone wants to just ask a question, that doesn't work very well (though these current forums would work fine for that, I guess)

I'd put up the site and just see if people wanted to end up using it but the license cost is a couple hundred bucks so I don't want to spend it if it won't be used :P

  • Decided to just go for it, if all else fails I can use the license for something else in the future. Plus, I got to use Hover for the first time for my registrar.

  • There's a pretty good thread about the Apple v. Samsung case going on over there:

  • I wanted to mention that the site has had some really good conversations going on over there and we'd love to get the input from some of the rest of you as well. This obviously doesn't take away from the unofficial forums, we're hoping this will be a good addition to being here as well. Come on over and join the fun!

  • I dunno, I just took a look over there and it is pretty much a ghost town. Your strategy to attract users (posted in one of that forum's threads) of posting links here is rather spammy as well.

I don't mean to hate, but I can't see why someone would rather post there when they can just submit stuff here and have a chance of somebody at Ting answering them.

  • I apologize for the spaminess and certainly don't intend to push this on other posts but considering the thread title, I didnt feel this was top out of place.
As far as why talk over there instead of here, I would say basic questions should certainly be over here but there is a place for building a community where people can talk about non-ting stuff with other ting users.
The conversations about Samsung v. Apple, CDMA details, and phone accessories are good examples of stuff that might interest Ting users but doesn't really fit on official forums.
Anyway, I appreciate your opinion. I just wanted to make sure people that might be interested know about it. No harm if it isn't for you.

  • Ugh, I typed that on my phone. There were supposed to be line breaks in there.

  • My take is that tingusers.com is more of a discussion forum, whereas help.ting.com is exactly that: for help/support.
