New (beta) dashboard

I couldn't find a thread for comments on the new (beta) dashboard, so here's one suggestion:

The old one had the cost of the plan level shown for what "level" your current usage puts you into.  That's no longer shown on the beta dashboard (I have to go to the "Plans" page to cross-reference what the pricing should be).  Would like to see that on the dashboard again.

Otherwise I really like the new dashboard!!  Especially the "per line" alerts plus the ability to "shut off" texts and data if that line exceeds a preset amount.  I don't see an immediate need for it (it's a business account), but it's nice that it's there and would probably be wonderful for a family with kids.

  • A couple things I've noted.

    • On my account, when I click on the "settings" button, sends me to a blank template page to set settings for some unknown device. I don't know what device that is supposed to refer to, but the sub-tab notes "device settings" without any further details.
    • On the dashboard, if I hit "view details" for a given category, the horizontal bars for each device don't make a lot of sense. The ratios of the bars are consistent relative to the other devices, but they don't correlate with the bar at the top of the list. If it matters, this is seen on Chrome.

  • I much prefer the old dashboard as well. I liked the fact that I could see at a glance what the usage is for each of the two phones on my account. The new dashboard doesn't show that... I'd love it if Ting simply gives us a choice. :(

  • Heather,

Ting does currently give us a choice.

If you have the new dashboard, click Settings and then Dashboard Preview. Choose "Leave me with the old Ting account dashboard for now" and click Save.

From the old dashboard, just click Dashboard Preview under "Your Settings" on the lower right. Then follow the instructions above.

Thanks, Bruce, I realize we have a choice now... I just got the impression that you would be switching to the new dashboard permanently. Do you know whether we'll continue to have that choice? I'll keep my fingers crossed!

  • I have no more insight into that than you do.

I do know that Brian Steere changed his unofficial Android app to use the new dashboard.

  • Not a fan at all of the new dashboard.  Old dashboard shows you were each category is cost-wise (ex. minutes currently at $9).  Prefer that, and really the old dash in general is set up nicely.

  • I agree that the old dashboard provides much better at-a-glance information about the things I care about-- what my usage is, and how that compares with the usage buckets.  The new one looks sexier, but that definitely comes at the cost of usefulness.

  • Thanks for your feed back on the new dashboard. Your feed back definitely helps us improve the way we do things. I will pass it along to our web designers. We want to make things and easy to read as possible.

A "sexier" look is our goal with functionality as well.

  • We have only been Ting customers for a couple of weeks, so we have very little experience with the old dashboard to serve as a basis for comparison. However, my employer still has IE8 on my work computer, and I do not see any dials--only large blue blocks. The date field contains "invalid date" for ALL of our individual usage entries, and every text message is shown as coming from our phones to someone else, even if it was actually the other way around; a couple from this morning are not listed yet. On my phone, the dials and dates show up, but there is a message at the top of the page telling me that there is a problem with my (stock Android) browser settings and encouraging me to get the latest version of IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or Opera. Please advise.

  • Jon,

There is an unofficial Ting app for Android. The last I heard, details for text was were working on it.

I plan on sending the developer some data to help him resolve that issue.

  • Actually I like the Unofficial Ting Dashboard on Play Store much better than new Ting Dashboard. It has 3 simple bars on top for total usage by category and a table breaking down usage by Phone on bottom. Not as nice as the original Ting Dashboard, but better than the new one.

  • @jon - Sorry about that, there is a problem with JavaScript loading in IE8. The team is working on it. That said, you won't see the gauges once it's fixed. You'll see a bar graph of the same data. IE8 doesn't support the way we did the gauges. So you'll see all the information once the bug is fixed, you just won't have it presented the same way as you would with a more modern browser.

  • We'll be posting a few updates to the Dashboard - a bunch today and a bunch next week.

I think I can see now why a lot of you were (are) struggling with the new Dashboard.

Our test data wasn't giving us a good view of some conceptual errors in the way the data was being presented that will be cleared up shortly.

What is SUPPOSED to be happening (and will be later today) is that the Bucket Indicator at the top tells you what bucket you are currently in and the gauge shows you how far you are THROUGH THAT BUCKET. Right now the gauge is incorrectly showing on a scale of Zero to the top of your current bucket. I believe this is why so many people found the gauge less useful.

The other thing which we somehow (embarrassingly) lost between design and implementation was the DOLLAR AMOUNTS. Basically all the gauge usage amounts were supposed to have costs beside them and we lost them somewhere in the process. Those changes will come next week.

Finally, we're changing the "View Details" bar graphs to work on a percentage of usage rather than the current way we're showing it. That way you'll see the actual usage in numbers (in the column) and the bar graph will show what percentage of overall usage each phone used.

Thanks again for all the feedback! We'll get it right at some point.

  • Interesting. Just like Jon, I am also seeing the data field contain "invalid date" for all the individual usage entries; I wonder how widespead a bug this is. I haven't cross-checked browsers, though I typically run Firefox, and my OS is Linux (Debian).

  • @megan - We're still looking into getting a full fix for that. Sorry about the inconvenience. Call or email us if you need the data in the meantime and we'll find a way to get it to you.

  • The new dashboard does not show how much credit I have with Ting. It would be nice to have this on the dashboard. It was on the old one.

There's the "You've earned $XX" thing. That shows I have $0, which is correct, but I know I have credit with Ting because customer service gave me some and I haven't used it all up yet.

  • Hey Benjamin,

We'll show you when you receive a credit (and for how much) on the Billing History very shortly (it's actually a bug that it's not showing already).

We're looking at adding a way to see your current total credits if any. There was a perfectly good reason we weren't showing this in the first place which it seems we've all now forgotten. :)

The "You've earned $XX" is about referral credits you've earned. We want you to see the total success of your referral efforts there and then be able to click through for details if you are interested.

    Thanks for the feedback.

  • First, I am bound to be a special case, so I don't expect you to fix this...  But thought the info may be useful to the web programmers.

My IE8 looks like the attached.  Since I am on the US Air Force system, there are numerous other IE features that may be turned off also.

What is it that makes the gauges look like gauges?  Java?

I also get a certificate warning every time I come to the help.ting.com pages.  "The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted authority."

  • Mike, due to limitations in IE 8, that is the way we have to display it. If you're able to, you might want to try Chrome or Firefox, but that might not be allowed if you're on the USAF network.

I can't say for sure about the certificate. It could be due to the network you're on though.

  • We launched an update to the Control Panel (i.e. "Your Account) this afternoon so that the Dashboard shows you the cost wherever we're showing you a usage amount. I think this will address a lot of the remaining issues (other than aesthetic differences of course!) and additional bug fixes and tweaks should make it just a bit better all round.

As always there is still a lot we want to do over time. We're just getting started!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

  • Ken,

There is one issue that has been on all dashboards. When I look under Referrals, it shows that I have 0 referrals, bit $50 referral credits. Of course, I have had 2 referrals, but they never have shown up on any Ting dashboard.

  • Hi Bruce,

That's true. That's a known issue we haven't had a chance to fix yet.

    Thanks for the reminder though.

  • Found a new issue with the new dashboard.

My account is for my business, so I have 9 devices on the account so far (with 4 more coming from AT&T as soon as those get closer to the end of their contracts). The problem is that with that many phones I am, and always will, go over the XXL "bucket" for minutes, but the $ usage hits the max of $52 that is for the last bucket....... and stops. I hit a total of 8,800 minutes last month and it stopped at $52 and stayed there until it reset for the next month. Need to have the $ amount calculation to keep going even when it goes past the XXL maximum.

Also, wondering why the minimum lines are even there of they will always be 0? Will those min/avg/max calculations eventually be using only a certain amount of past data points (like the previous 12 months)? If not then the minimum and average lines will become sort of useless over time - for instance, after about three years or so the mins will still be 0 and the average number will start to get closer to the max number (assuming "normal" usage levels out to around the max number).

  • Thanks Chuck,

The issue is actually a bit worse than you've described, but we know how to fix it and will do so this week.

Right now the "Your Usage So Far" amount is the total of your current minute, message and megabyte buckets prices. It doesn't include the cost of the device or any Extra Charges (Directory Assistance, International Calling or using your device outside the USA) and it also doesn't include the cost of usage beyond XXL.

We'll change the wording (and the amount) to reflect ALL charges (other than taxes) that we know about at the point you opened the Dashboard. That will be much more useful than what we have now.

The "minimum usage is zero" is also a bug we need to fix.

While I'm at it, we're showing the Referral Count as zero no matter how many people you've referred to Ting. The calculations are happening correctly, we're just not displaying them right.

  • Please just get rid of the main Settings tab, it's causing confusion and is therefore actively harmful. That functionality would be better suited to a subsection of the Devices area and labeled "defaults for future devices" or similar.

I could also see having a global setting that individual devices could override, but that can get complicated. Feedback from people managing many devices (i.e. business customers) would be a better way to drive that.

  • You know Trevor, I think you're right about the Settings page. It's not really doing what we want that potential for confusion is pretty obvious.

We'll see about pulling that feature and going back to the drawing board on how to implement it.

    Thanks.
