Moto X

I know it's early, but any word on availability to bring it over once it's purchased from Motorola/Google?

  • Well, never mind. Either I imagined it or it's already been fixed.

  • Yay - got mine on order  ;-)

Ironically, the device alert email blast announcing that it is available arrived 3 minutes after my purchase confirmation did - LOL.

  • "The Moto X, Motorolla's new flagship device"

Spell checker needed on Devices page - Incorrect for both color phones.

  • Republics $299 motox is very appealing compared to tings $565.  However, for me, I like the ting option of a little 3G data (I use about 100 MB a month).  With republic it's either $10 with no 3G data or $25 with 3G.  (Republic does allow switching plans twice  a month)

  • EASY DECISION; REPUBLIC WILL NOW GET MY BUSINESS AS $565. IS UNACCEPTABLE. PERIOD. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH MOTOROLA AND WILL RETHINK EVEN GETTING THE X!

  • I'm starting to think that Republic's plan may not be sustainable, depending on how much loss they are taking on for that phone. You also have to wonder if they get a substantial amount of new customers that decide not to use wi-fi as much, wont they actually be taking on a loss for the service too? How will they kick any abusers off the service without generating negative PR? It seems to be a very tricky situation for them, but I do hope they have success.

Are we going to be able to BYOD with the Moto X from Sprint? I hope so.

  • Just curious, aside from saving $15, what would be the point of BYOD from Sprint?

  • @Jay Well you don't save much right away - it's buying it used a few months from now where you can save by BYOD.

@Chris - You are right.  I hope some of these newer phones will eventually become BYOD as things have been pretty stagnant on that side. That's why I was hoping since the Moto X is getting such a huge launch to so many carriers it might be available for BYOD.

  • Although the $565 price is ludicrous for this device, we need to remember that Ting is not to blame for that price... Motorola set that price. Ting is offering it to us at (or near) what it costs them to get the device. Ting isn't the bad guy here, Motorola is.

  • I would like to know if I can buy a Moto X from Sprint and bring it over?

  • I totally agree with Michael. Motorola led us to believe this device would be mid range priced and that's what appealed to a huge amount of people who just can't "pop" $565. for a phone. Shame on you Motorola....  typical greedy American company!

  • @Mike, I doubt Sprint will allow BYOD, considering the recent experience with the Galaxy S4 & HTC One.

  • I'm disappointed, though not surprised, that the price wasn't lower. I was briefly hopeful that it would be cheaper after seeing Republic Wireless' $299 deal, but they came right out and said that that was subsidized, which they can do despite no contracts because their phones can only be used with their service (unlike Ting? - I'm actually not sure on this point).

At any rate, while it would be great if somebody would put out a really nice upper-mid-range phone in the range of $300-400 off-contract, I don't know why people are bent out of shape about a phone costing $550-600 or whatever. I don't think Motorola ever hinted that it would be priced any lower - they repeatedly referred to it as a flagship phone. People just saw the leaked specs and assumed dual core = mid-range. But it's not just a dual-core phone, it has the additional low-power cores for voice and sensor processing, not to mention the software that Moto added to take advantage of those additional processors.

I think $565 for a computer that blows away my three-year-old laptop, yet can slip into my pocket, is pretty reasonable.

  • Ditto to what Jay said... Motorola isn't being greedy... the built a phone with some innovation in it, and priced it accordingly. No one is being forced to buy the thing.

In terms of midrange, their CEO said (shortly after the launch of the X) that there *will* be a midrange phone in the Moto X family (it's not just this one device) coming out later this fall. Hopefully it's got a good balance of build quality and price.

  • Everyone here had some great input...  just really disappointed as others with the price. Do appreciate other viewpoints.

Guess I was a little harsh with my comments.

  • I'm looking forward to joining my wife on Ting soon and am planning on getting the Moto X.  I've heard ATT's exclusive on the customizable phone runs out in early November.  Is this true and will the customizable phones be available to Ting users?  Thanks!

  • Currently the Moto Maker is an AT&T exclusive. We don't have information on when that would be or even possible with anyone other than AT&T at this moment.

  • Which means they probably just got the shipment in Monday or Tuesday, and are trying to get the pre-orders shipped out now.  If it was like one of the last new phone releases, they said they pushed like crazy to at least get the pre-ordered ones out the door and sent the shipping notices out to everyone later once they had time.  That happened when I got my S3 when it came out, the email was sent to me a day or two after they actually shipped it.
