Moto X

I know it's early, but any word on availability to bring it over once it's purchased from Motorola/Google?

  • Hi Jacob.  We just wanted to make sure to note that the Moto X did require the SIM.  We are still waiting to be able to BYOD the Moto X.   We're working on it!

  • I'm concerned that with the release of the Moto X+1 this summer, Motorola/Lenovo might not continue making the Moto X, or if they do, it might shut down Moto Maker. In anticipation of that, I want to order a custom Moto X before or immediately after the announcement (the rumored 5" display of the successor makes the phone less appealing). Given that the Moto X was released last August, does that mean it won't be eligible for BYOD before then? Given its relatively mediocre sales performance, could it possibly be eligible earlier?

  • Hi Robert.  We're always working to make devices available for BYOD as soon as possible.  There's no news about timing for the Moto X as yet, but we'll let you know.

  • Thanks Marty, I know Ting works incredibly hard. I think I might be ordering one soon in anticipation, because news dropped today that Motorola will be shuttering the U.S. assembly this year: http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/30/5764836/motorola-shutting-down-us-assembly-plant

  • It's been about a month since the last update to this thread and i'm curious if there is any news about the status of the Moto X as a BYOD option.  I would really like to try ting's service but using my sprint moto x is a necessity.

  • Hi John,

We don't quite have any updates on the status of bringing the Sprint Moto X to Ting at the moment. Once we do, we'll be sure to post it to our blog!

  • Haven't heard any updates in a while, but in another thread one of the Ting staff suggested we could expect September. Now the BYOD page says October. https://ting.com/byod/find - I'm ready for this thing to happen already.

  • Hi Robert!  We still do not have an exact date, but yes, our team is expecting we'll be able to activate the Moto X by sometime in October.  Please watch the blog for announcements!

  • When did the Moto X get dropped from the Ting store? I'd imagine it would sell well for Ting at the current price ($350) - can Ting not match that?

  • Hey Jay!  We don't have any stock at the moment.  BYOD is coming very soon for the Moto X though, please watch for an announcement.

  • With the Moto X Pure (unlocked) on the cusp of being released by Motorola + the regular Moto X BYOD option coming soon to Ting, what do the Ting Reps have to say about an unlocked Moto X (Pure) becoming a BYOD option in the near term?

  • Hey there Anthony, it is still a little early, it maybe that we will be able to activate that model the same way we did the Nexus 5, but we may have to wait the way we did for the Moto X. Which ever we are able to accomplish will be shared in our blog.

  • Cool. The Moto X is pretty cheap on Craigslist. My phone was utterly destroyed a couple of nights ago, so I guess I'll get a dumb phone for a while until the X is official.

  • Those interested in getting a brand new first generation Moto maker moto X should take a peek at this thread on Reddit...it worked for me in early August:

  • Just to let everyone know, you can now BYO Moto X. Despite often repeated assertions from the very polite staff here, there was no official notice in the blog. I BYOD'd my Moto X this weekend with no issues, I just wish Ting would have let me know it was possible without having to check IMEI numbers manually, daily.

  • Robert, was it a 1st Gen or 2nd Gen ?

  • The new Moto X (2014) is not available on Sprint and is incompatible with the Sprint network. Only original Moto Xs (2013) will work. There is no word on whether the new Moto X will ever be a possibility on Sprint.

  • You're right Robert, we didn't really make a huge announcement with the Moto X (1st gen) as we usually do. It's partly due to the device being a little trickier than we thought. There are a lot of models out there that we're still learning about. We were able to successfully add some models, but the process will be a bit of touch and go. We wanted to make sure we had a firm grasp before making the announcement. The BYOD launch of the Moto X has been a bit of a soft launch.

It's officially listed on our ting.com/byod page and anyone who comes across this, if you have a North American CDMA Moto X that you'd like to bring to Ting, have the ESN ready and give it a go. If you hit a speedbump, give us a shout, and we'll figure it out from there.

  • Just goes to show Brennan that depending on who, from Ting, responds in this blog that some answers provided are better researched than others and everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • Keeping things simple is our mantra. Tis' true that more research is better than less. However, we do want to be as helpful as possible. We're trying to be more transparent and up front with all things Ting, including device updates, especially for the BYOD timeline. We do have plans in the works to improve device notifications and updates in the short future.

  • Nexus 6 announced.  Enlarged Moto X.  Destined for Sprint so hopefully destined for Ting, down the road.
