"Nexus 5" Here You Come?!?!?!

You've read the rumors, I've read the rumors...CDMA enabled for Sprint network!  I already sent Ting a G+ callout indicating they better be staffing up because they are going to be getting slammed!  I for one will definitely be adding a new device to my account!!

  • Sagi,

I realize they're not wired (I don't use wired headsets), but the LG Tone+ bluetooth headphones are cheap, pretty damn good, have great battery life, and sound great on calls... not to mention have pause, skip, and replay buttons that are supported in android. I have had no issue with them on my Nexus 4.

  • I've considered going BT but didn't want something else to charge. How long would yours last, given average use? I'll reconsider if I can find a set. Yours seem nice. Thanks Scott!

  • I guess it depends on what you consider normal use. I always get a full day+ of listening/talking with plenty to spare, but usually only have to charge once every few or so. I have had them on standby with limited use for over a week. It is also nice that it speaks the battery level every time you turn them on or off.

I like these because no cord pulls on the buds. Controls are very well laid out with pause, skip, replay on the right, and answer/call, volume up and down on the left, and are very easy to locate by touch. It sits nicely under your collar and is out of sight with most shirts with just the ear buds coming up from your collar. Folks can't even see you're wearing it. I have even played golf with them, which is almost impossible with a wired headset.

  • If anyone needs a micro SIM from Sprint, I suggest trying an Apple store if you have one nearby. I was in and out in 5 minutes with no issues.

Just said I needed a micro SIM for Sprint, the one for the iPad mini... helper came back 5 minutes later, handed me the SIM and said have a nice day.

  • Well, that's hopeful.  I don't know that we'll eventually be able to use the N5 on Ting.  The only thing holding me back is the inline mic issue.  It's very disappointing to have to deal with something like that when other phones of it's equal have no issue.  I shouldn't have to (though I'm considering it) purchase a 40-70 bluetooth device just to get around this type of error.

  • I didn't see this here, but it got posted on the device update

    https://ting.com/blog/

UPDATE: We have successfully activated our first few Nexus 5 devices purchased from Google Play on Ting. We’re a little way from a fully fledged solution that we can roll out but we’re making great progress. Stay tuned: We’ll have a full update here on the Ting blog as soon as possible.

  • I'm itching to put my order in at the play store asap..... it almost sounds like Ting made it work without even needing Sprint's word.  Looking forward to being a customer of Ting's when this is all hammered out!

  • With the update to the official blog post, is it worth pulling the trigger on ordering the Nexus 5 now from the Play store and having a fully working solution to activate it on Ting by the time it arrives?

  • It's been fun, but it looks like there is a new thread I'll be checking every 20 mins.

  • I really didn't expect to get an update so fast, almost wish I hadn't cancelled my Play order.  But it should be fine.  It's not like I'm hurting, just impatient.  :)

  • I placed my order on the 1st, fearing they'd run out quickly and hoping ting would figure out a way to activate it before my return window was up. Delivery is scheduled for today, so I'm anxiously waiting to hear what Justen has to say.

  • Sweet!  Amazing how nimble Ting is.  Great that they jumped on this so quickly.  I'm keeping both my N5 and fingers crossed!  FYI, I subscribed to the other page too.

  • @Wesley Two recommendations either: Diztronic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47223538&postcount=57) buy it here ( http://tpu-cases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=&products_id=368) use promo code "repeatbuyer" to save $1. Or Cruzerlite () buy it here ( http://www.cruzerlite.com/cases/lg/nexus-5) use promo code "xda" for 10% off OR "b2g1" for buy 2 get 1 free. Otherwise use Amazon if you have Prime and time is of the essence.

I've used TPU on my last 4 handsets by both of these manufacturers and it's all you really need IMO.

  • @J L yep I may go that route I had an otterbox on my SIII, since my move to Ting I have had a TPU case on a GNex. I do like the tough cases but they also hide the device a bit too much and to me the Nexus 5 is a looker. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • @Wesley I was pleased with Spigen's offerings for my super cool GSM phones (iPhone 4s, 5, HTC One, Note2) that I owned before switching to Ting. I have my eye on this one

  • Thanks Willard those look pretty nice also, by looking at my play store order I still have no idea when the phone will be shipped so I probably have time.

  • Checking into this thread to report that (after a quick email to Justen), my white 32gb Nexus is functioning with voice and text, but no mms/data. This is under a BYOD activation under "Sprint" and not the "Ting" or "Other Carrier" options.

  • Update to my device status: I now have full data/internet access, but I'm not sure about mms (only have Hangouts). I can freely switch between 2g, 3g, and LTE when selecting a preferred network speed.

I think this was the result of something Justen posted at the other N5 thread about flashing the N5 back to factory using the developer mode console.  http://www.droid-life.com/2013/11/05/how-to-flash-nexus-5-factory-images/

It doesn't appear to be much different than factory resetting from within the phone (which I tried; no change to data/mms functions), but I guess flashing has some specific properties that may not happen with "regular" resetting.

While following the instructions, I kept the Sprint SIM in the slot, rather than having a first boot be empty of SIM (just in case). After it rebooted, I performed a PRL and Profile update. I can't say whether that immediately worked because I spent well over 30 minutes configuring my phone to how I wanted it, but I decided to turn on data afterward to see if there was any change and was surprised to see the LTE icon over the bars.

  • Looks like N5's are being sold on amazon now, but not at the Google  Price, $75-$100 premium.  These are not sold by Amazon, but other vendors using Amazon

  • @Bryan Amazon has it, but it's only a black 16GB for Sprint @ 499.99 off contract. lol! ( http://www.amazon.com/Google-Nexus-5-Black-Sprint/dp/B00GCLZJ1G)

  • @J L

Here are some vendors (not Amazon) that are selling the unlocked at a premium.  I'm willing to wait for Google Play because I think it will ship sooner than listed and I don't have time to run around to Sprint/Apple/Best Buy to get a sim anyway.  Maybe some people will jump on these and cancel the Play Store order, getting me a phone faster.
