Galaxy Note 3

Is it possible to buy a Galaxy Note 3 at a Sprint store at a non-contract price and then have it switched over to Ting? How long before Ting offers the Galaxy Note 3 directly? Thanks.

  • Not likely.

Sprint would not allow the HTC One & Galaxy S4. It was mentioned that they might be allowed a year after first release.

  • Hey there Janine, The Note 3 isn't eligible for BYOD at this time. Keep an eye on our supported device list for updates. Also keep in mind we can only activate Sprint devices, if your phone came from another source we may not be able to activate.

  • Hey Laurel,

Not right now I am afraid. The Note 3 is not available to BYOD for about 12 months from the date of release. It would need to be purchased through Ting to be used with us.

For a detailed list of the devices that can be brought to Ting, you can reference our handy supported device list.

  • Hi Steve,

We don't have an ETA as to when the Note 3 will be supported as part of our BYOD program. New devices generally have to be out for about a year before they become eligible for BYOD. Be sure to check out our blog over the next couple of months as this is where announcements regarding devices are posted.

  • It has been a few months since this discussion has been updated.  Do you have more information as to if/when the Note 3 might be BYOD eligible?

  • I get that the note3 can't be BYODded (that's totes a verb now) until a date which is unknown but presumed to be sometime this fall.  However, it is also not currently listed as purchasable from Ting.  Is there really a window of total unavailability between whenever you had some in November and whenever we can BYOD one maybe this coming November?  That would be annoying.

  • Ahh, temporary supply situation, understood.  And I also understand that the policy of what devices to feature on your device page depends on several factors, and management considers them all and makes what they consider the best call.  I'd just like to make the point that leaving a device in the "catalog" but admitting that it's out of stock, and removing every trace that it had ever been there, make two very different statements to prospective buyers.

  • Hi James,

If you are referring to activating a Sprint Galaxy S4 on Ting, April 30th, 2014 is the date that it will be eligible for BYOD.

    @Ben thanks for the feedback.

  • Samuel,

For most newer phones, Sprint keeps them off the whitelist until Sprint has sold them for a year.

In that window of exclusivity, your only option is to buy the phone direct from Ting, if they sell that model.

The BYOD FAQ is at https://ting.com/byod#faq

  • Hey Samuel, we don't really trade or buy devices back, and can only activate phones listed under our BYOD list. As Bruce mentioned above, we can't usually bring devices within 1 year from that model's release date, so there's a chance we might be able to do that later this year. You could also consider selling that device through Glyde if you don't want to wait for that.

  • can I unlock or hack the phone to make it work on ting?

  • Not really, Samuel. It has nothing to do with rooting, unlocking or hacking, but just the fact that we're not allowed to provide service to that particular device during that one year.

  • Hey Girija. We expect that to happen closer to October, but that's just an estimate and we don't have a confirmation at the moment.

  • According to this:

    http://www.prepaidphonenews.com/2014/05/banned-phones-tracking-sprint-blacklist.html

I can activate my Sprint Note 3 as early as 10/4/2014.  Is that correct?

  • Hi Jason!  That's a good guideline, but it's not an exact science.  We don't have an exact activation date for the Note 3 just yet, but you can be sure we'll announce it when we do!

  • Should I go ahead and buy a Ting SIM Card while I'm waiting?

  • Hi Jason, you can if you like.  Just go to our Shop page, choose the SIM card option, and select the Note 3 from the drop-down menu.

  • I have another question for some folks. Oviously I am interested in a Note phone. Just can't make up my mind whether Note 2 or wait for Note 3! I know both will have kitkat available, but is there any real difference between phones! I am really a loyal phone holder...lol My current phone is an lg ms695, which is cdma on Metropcs. As I mentioned before it will be killed of by Metropcs sometime early next year, so I can wait on the Note 3 to be available with Ting. So for those that may have had both Note 2 and then upgraded to Note 3 with another carrier, is it worth waiting on Note 3 for TIng? Or since both have almost the same specs and I am not a data hog to begin with should I go ahead with a Note 2? I appreciate any oppinion on this regardless of how it may come...lol
