iPhone 5 no data

I recently activated two iPhone 5 phones in the central Wisconsin area. I live in a relatively small town, but travel to Madison often, which is a much larger city. I get excellent coverage and in many cases my phone shows that I have 3G and LTE, especially in the city. My current problem is: since I activated both of the phones NEITHER of them have been able to connect to data... at all. All the settings are correct and i have done soft resets and factory restore on both phones, yet still no data. Kenisha from Ting has been super helpful and says that the towers in almost all of Wisconsin are down right now most likely due to upgrading.

I'm posting this thread more to ask other Ting customers if they have experienced the same thing, or am I alone? I know Sprint has had previous trouble with iOS 7 and iPhone 5 phones and connection to data services. It has been over a week since activation and still no data coverage. I'm really hoping it isn't a phone problem. Anyone else out there with me on this?

  • My data has been going in and out. I used to have 4G coverage under Sprint, but now my iphone will not connect to 4G at all. I've tried a profile reset, I have not had the time to do a complete phone reset yet. Im hoping I find the issue BEFORE having to do that.

  • Hey Richard,

This phone actually makes the whole factory reset completely painless and you can just back up EVERYTHING to the cloud (with the exception of music). So when you Factory Reset the phone it will prompt you to restore the phone with all your settings and content, including messages and contacts.

If it doesn't work for you please get in touch with support.

  • Sorry I forgot to post my solution after it was fixed. As i said we tried everything possible (i.e. hard reset, factory reset, switch data on/off, profile update, etc...) and none of that worked.

It came down to the Ting rep turning the data off to both of my phones on the Ting end, then turning it back on. After that I turned my phone off for about 5 mins and turned it back on and voila! I had data!

I hope this helps somebody who has the same problems with initial setup or even just a loss of service for unknown reasons.

The only thing I'm waiting for now is to get LTE. For some reason all i get is 3G everywhere I go. Hmmmmmm

  • Interesting. I have 2 iPhones and the other one is working fine. Or is it? I'll have to check. Maybe Ting can do it and I'll check later? I have no data now anyway and the other phone is at school, so no data permitted...

  • I've had the same issue where it appears I either 3G/LTE data but will not connect.  I have tried everything that you mentioned, Michael, so I suggested your solution.  Hopefully this works.

  • I'm having the issue right now.  The ting rep has walked me through all the procedures above...and nothing.  Getting very frustrated!

  • So after trying everything...I did another factory reset and set up the iPhone as a new phone instead of restoring it with a backup.  The data finally worked and then i restored using my backup.  So maybe this will help in your case, Mary.

  • Is anyone able to get 4G LTE on iphone 5? I tried profile update, factory reset, network reset... I'm trying to figure out if my 2 iPhone 5 are the only ones with the problem.

  • Scott, that's my problem now. I can't get LTE on either of my iPhones. And it's definitely not a location problem seeing as i just took a road trip across the country and got nothing but 3G the entire time on both of the phones. Very frustrating to have two iPhone 5 phones and only be able to get 3G. Please post on here if you figure out a solution. I've tried a million and one things and still no solution has been found.

  • Hi all,

After a lot of work on both our part and the friendly folks at Ting, we now have both our iPhone 5 devices working on LTE (at least they have been so far tonight). Just to recap, we were not able to get LTE working on either of our phones AT ALL. After a lot of troubleshooting (went to Apple store, talked to Ting, talked to folks in local Sprint store, Ting talked to Sprint (took a long time to get an answer)), Ting sent us 2 new SIM cards. After installing them and doing a full factory reset on one phone, and a Network reset on the other, they are now both seeing LTE data. Now our data usage can go up with reckless abandon (I hope not!). Thanks Ting!!!

  • I switched from AT&T to Ting 2 weeks ago and have 2 Samsung Galaxy S3 and 4 IPhone 5. 4G LTE seems to work fine on the Samsung phones. None of the Iphone 5 can connect to 4G LTE. I bought all the nano SIM cards from Ting and have confirmed all the ICCID number on each phone. I have tried at least one network reset on each phone and still have no luck seeing 4G LTE. I suppose I can try factory reset but would like to see if there is anything else to try before doing that.

  • Hi Eric!

I see you're working with one of my teammates already which is great - she's going to get back to you again shortly.  In general, a factory reset would be the next step after doing a network reset and profile update, since you know that the ICCIDs are all correct.

  • I have recently activated 2 iPhone 5's on ting. Both required a full device reset after the initial activation to enable data (must download a carrier file or something at setup). One iPhone 5 has never reported LTE. Ting said Sprint was having LTE work in my area but I just went to Des Moines this weekend and it was on 3G the entire trip, while the other iPhone did connect to LTE. Clearly there the one phone has an improper configurations somehow. Since 3G is working fine I haven't bothered to do another device reset to see if that clears it up.

  • I did a factory reset of one of the 4 iPhone 5 over the weekend and this seems to solve the issue. Just asked the kids to do the factory reset on their iPhone 5 to see if it works on their phones too.
