Can't Receive Incoming Calls - Fast Busy All the Time

Hello,  I've been on Ting for over a year now and it's been almost as good as my experience with Sprint.  Other than a few issues, I've been enjoying saving some money and getting reasonable service.

Over the past 2 weeks now, I've been unable to receive any incoming calls.  The problems started with everyone in my family when we spoke we would get poor quality voice calls.  It sounded like the voice was being compressed and it would cut out on nearly every other word at times, we were doing a lot of "can you hear me now" and "is that better now" type questions.

Anyway, after contacting Ting on this they advised that I do a carrier reset, which I did.  Several days later I was told that my phone was constantly busy (fast or rapid busy signal).  Like all circuits are busy.  I also can't access my voice mail box, it too gives me a fast busy all the time.  I have a HTC 4G LTE phone and it isn't rooted or anything special.

My question is, has anyone else experienced anything like this in the past here on Ting or on another carrier's service?  I've got another open ticket with Ting on this (7 days ago it was opened), but I'm concerned that the solution is going to take at least another week or more.  I'm using this phone for business and needless to say, I'm not getting any calls and people are complaining that they are unable to reach me and/or even leave a voice message..

Again, I can call out fine, send and receive text messages, I have wifi and data access, just can not receive any incoming calls or check my voice mail.

Thanks in advance to anyone able to give me any suggestions and/or possible fixes.  I appreciate it!

-Fred

  • In April 2013, while I was still a Sprint customer, I experienced a similar problem. All calls made were "dead air" on both ends, but the phone had excellent signal. To resolve the issue, I had called Sprint and they sent a signal to my device (which I now use on Ting) which resolved the problem. Once the signal was received, my device showed a "Software Update" message then restarted. The problem never happened again.

  • Thanks for your comment Philip.  I appreciate it.  Sprint must have forced / pushed a software update to your phone.  I've done all the firmware & software updates, along with carrier reset and profile updates multiple times to see if that would help this particular situation.  It's just strange that no one can call me at any time.  The fast busy is normally all circuits are busy or in my case I believe it is a configuration problem.  My family can try my number and then try someone sitting next to me (also on Ting) and it goes through for everyone except my phone.

Thanks again for your response.  Maybe someone in Ting can advise on this one.  I do already have an open ticket on this particular problem.

  • Hey Fred, I see that you have been working with Heather on this. You have run through all the usual troubleshooting steps, contacted the carrier and now you are waiting on a signal booster.  It looks like you have covered all your bases and hopefully this last step will clear up the trouble you have been experiencing.

  • Thanks Sam.  I really hope so.  It's just frustrating not being able to receive any phone calls or have anyone leave a voice mail message for me.  Yet everything else seems to work.  Everything was fine for over a year and now, it's not working.  I was reaching out here in case someone else had experienced this same thing and there was some other fix.  I'll hook up the Airave once it arrives and will test it immediately.  Hopefully with positive results!

  • Well, I received the Airave and now have more bars on the phone (5), but still can not receive any calls.  Hopefully someone within Ting can help me get this resolved.  Three weeks now and I still can not receive incoming phone calls and also can not access my voice mail either.  Very frustrating!!!

  • I did a complete factory reset (hard reset) and still have the same issue.  I've left my phone turned off and when someone calls me it doesn't go to voice mail it continues to give the caller a rapid/fast busy signal like all circuits are busy.  Very strange.  If the phone is a problem, you'd think it would at least go to your voice mail box.  Has anyone else experienced anything like this?  Thanks in advance!

  • Fred - I've been looking into this for you, trying to find a cause for the issue. What I suggest doing is making a report with Sprint (since they mange the numbers and network), make it clear you are a Ting customer, but no resolution has been found. Perhaps one the Sprint technicians can find a resolution.

  • Fred,

Now you have received the Airave and still have issues, you should contact Ting either on you original support ticket or open a new one.

I assume you verified you are in an area where Sprint allows Airave devices. See http://www.sprint.com/landings/airave_eligibility/ to verify.

  • Philip,  Thank you for that information.  Ting is recommending that I purchase a new phone to see if that fixes the problem.  I may try Sprint first then, just to see if that will save me the expense of another phone.  Especially since mine works fine on outbound calls, texting both ways, data via the network or wifi.  Just not able to receive any incoming calls.

Bruce, thank you for your comment.  I have been in contact with Heather throughout this problem.  The Airave is working, it just isn't helping with my phone receiving calls.  I did verify that the Airave was usable in my area prior to installation and according to Sprint it is, plus it's working fine.  Also, I am getting the 3 beeps when I'm connected to our Airave and am also getting 5 bars now at my home.  The quality seems better, but still am unable to receive any calls and am unable to dial into my voice mail box to check for any messages (although since no one can get through on my number, they also can not leave a voice mail message as they are never prompted).  Only fast busys when my number is dailed (even when my phone is turned off for an extended period of time (12 hours)).  This fast busy that everyone gets is from different cell networks as well as from land lines when dialing my number.  Very strange.

    Thanks for your responses.-Fred

  • I tried contacting Sprint about my on going problem.  They told me since I"m a Ting customer that I should contact their technical support team (which I have done).  Ting should really contact Sprint if they need help, hopefully they will again soon.

The latest update is that I purchased a refurbished Ting phone (per their recommendation) and now I can't swap my number over to it because of the same issue I'm having.  So it clearly is some problem in the network associated directly with my phone number.  I've had this number for 13 years and was with Sprint prior to coming over to Ting early last year.  We never had problems like this on Sprint and Ting was really good until recently (last 2 months quality has dropped, that could be a Sprint problem in our area though).

I've asked about escalating my particular issue within Ting.  We'll see how that goes.  It been over 2 weeks now since I opened this ticket with Ting.  Overall, it's been over 3 weeks without the ability to receive phone calls on my number.  Extrememly frustrating.

  • Hey Fred. I just checked your open request and saw that Heather is still investigating it and waiting for some additional information from other sources before going forward. We don't have anything conclusive yet, but will let you know through that request as soon as we do.

  • Thanks Fellipe.  Heather had updated me this morning that she is working with Sprint on this problem.  Hopefully between Ting and Sprint technical support, I'm hopeful that a quick solution is coming soon.  I'll update this thread if anything new comes up (positive results, I hope).

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Fred. I just saw your post. I have been experiencing similar problems with my HTC 4G LTE also.

My receive problems appears to be just limited to incoming calls. This has been an on and off again problem for at least two months. I am a 'newby' (this is my fourth month with Ting and a smartphone) so I attributed problems to my lack of knowledge on configuring the HTC. Besides not receiving in-coming phone calls, my phone configuration keeps changing to 'vibrate' in all available places it can be set. I turned off vibrate (and enable ring) everywhere I could about five times now over the last few months. The ring setting seems to be holding since my last reset two weeks ago. I still have vibrate off everywhere. I still miss all incoming calls.

This week, two outgoing calls I placed never showed up in my call list. One attached and rang about 4 -5 times. The other just beeped once and when silent. I was successful on two other calls. Each of these calls where to same number and 15 minutes apart. Unfortunately these four calls where medically critical and could have had grave impact. I stopped using this cell for any critical incoming or outgoing calls at this time until I can maintain consistency and continuity at all times.

I have noticed that my signal bar only shows the lowest point in the half of my house farthest away from the road in front. What is interesting is that while setting or standing in my front room I get 4 bars. If I go out side one step and come back inside on the second step, I get 5 bars. As soon as I stand or walk slowly outside or or just inside the signal bar drops back to 3 then 2. Further inside I am back to 1 bar. I also noticed that the cell tower I usually connect to must be at least 4 - 5 miles. so my problem may be lack of signal strength.

I have installed all the available updates, but will again force a reset and update of firmware and any HTC applications. I really like Ting, but this is my first time with Sprint. I moved over from Verizon to reduce overhead. I will look into the same processes you have followed to see if this resolves my incoming call issues.

Thank you all for the great information.
Fred, I hope your issue is resolved soon.

  • Bill, thanks for that info.  I've been with Ting for well over a year now and only recently started having problems.  This problem however has kept me from receiving any incoming calls for nearly a month now.  Very frustrating.  I've continued to be able to call people and send/receive text & data with no problems at all.  I had read about a few problems with the HTC 4G LTE like you are having.  You might want to check the Sprint Community website and see if any of the threads are like the problems you are experiencing.  It might be a hardware/cell phone problem.  I hope the medical issues are all okay now.  Thanks again for your input.  I hope your problems get resolved soon too.

Jerry, thanks for the heads up about the Airwave.  I had read something about that also.  From what I saw, it depends on how you connect it to your router.  I ran some tests after connecting it and haven't noticed any slow down on our home network.  Thanks again though.  I appreciate the input for sure.

  • Good morning,

The latest update on my ongoing problem is now my phone service is completely unavailable.  I now can no longer even make calls or receive/send text messages.  Sprint is working with Ting on a solution, so I'm hopeful that something will be done today.  My refurbished phone that I purchased wouldn't activate with my existing number, so that was a no go.  Now I'm trying to activate the refurbished phone with a new number just so I have a working phone, but that seems to be hung up in some activation process ("Device activation in progress").  I've continued to update Ting on the status and still have an open ticket on this chronic problem.  I'm hopeful that maybe I'll have a working phone service again this week.

I just thought I'd update the thread in case anyone else has had this experience or has any ideas on a resolution.  Thanks for listening.

  • Well, I am up and running once again.  It did take some time, but there was a routing problem on the Sprint side that had caused this problem.  Ting is putting into place some type of procedure that will detect this type of problem should it arise in the future for anyone else.  So if your phone gets a rapid / fast busy all the time when people try to call you and you get the same fast busy when you try to call your own voice mail box, then you might ask Ting if there is a possible Routing problem.  Good luck to all and thanks to those who commented and tried to help here.  I appreciate it!  -Fred

p.s. - I am back on my original phone and am returning the refurbished phone that wasn't required since it was a configuration problem on the Sprint side.
