Ting New Control Panel Feedback

Today we launched the new Ting control panel, designed to make managing your account even easier. We really hope you like it!

Has it resolved a problem you had with the control panel before? Great--we want to know. Did we take away something that you loved and used everyday? We want to know that too.

Let us know what you think in the comments below!

  • Nice looking format that gives a quick snapshot of usage.  What I miss is the cost of going to the next tier of service. My suggestion to fix this: Make the headers for the 3 circle charts look like this:

                                   L  $ZZ

                                   M  $YY

    Minutes                 S  $XX

You could highlight the level of current usage, or put an arrow next to it, or something like that.  Keep the S, M, or L data  inside the circle as is.

  • I commend your team on a very well designed new look. I've found the new interface to be very user friendly and access to data requiring fewer key strokes/mouse clicks. Thank you.

  • What a great way to start a Friday.  I like things that are new and shiny.  It is much smoother and quicker for me to now check current usage.  Thanks TING!!!

  • I'm brand new to Ting (my Average Monthly Bill is still $0!), but even so, I prefer the old speedometer look. This new Panel isn't terrible, and I'm sure I'll get used to it; but it's not a huge improvement IMO. And I like the Details pages even less than the graphic on the first screen. I guess I'm a numbers person too.

    I second Stefan's and Jeffrey's comments.

I only have my one line account; but if my account included several users, I agree with some other posters, and I would NOT like being unable to easily see usage info for each person.

I've experienced a sort of Murphy's Law move to Ting - some of it Ting's fault, more of it not - but at least 35-40% of my usage to date has been me trying to correct problems or find workaround a to them. Guess that's just the way things go sometimes.

Finally, I access my account about 98% of the time from my tablet (and I would be saying "or my phone" - except the iPhone I got was "not as described", shall I say...), so the "hovering" approach won't work for me.

For now, my hat's off to Ting for its novel pricing structure & drive to innovate. Blazing new trails always involves trial and error, and I really appreciate that Ting communicates so frequently & openly with us customers, this Feedback forum being a great example. I do hope my experience here in the future follows the "Improving Steadily" path, just as I hope Ting's products and services will.

  • Someone earlier commented that they liked the checkboxes on the device settings page better, and I have to agree, including on the device detail page where you actually edit the settings..  "On" and "Off" obviously both begin with "O" and are too similar for a fast scan, and the wider panel means you could look like you're watching a tennis match.  Here's a thought - color code each line, both on that page and the detail page.  If the feature is "On" - make the text green, a solid dark green, nothing wishy washy.  And if the feature is "Off" - make it red, and I do mean a good, solid red, no pink or peppermint here.

This is not really a 'dashboard' issue, but there has been earlier discussion about the detail for the previous billing periods.  I don't really want to have to do the Excel slide-and-dice to get what I want each month.  I'm perfectly capable of it, it's what I do at work.  What I want is a summary by line of how many minutes, messages, megabytes.  I have to say I've trained our daughter pretty well to use wifi when available, but I'm betting there are some parents out there who'd like to know who the data hog on their account is.

  • I like the old way better.  I agree with several folks who commented they liked the spreadsheet layout for each device.  I have 4 users and would like to see their usage, in numbers like it was, at a glance.

  • I agree, I like the old numbers for each user better.  I can't find an easy way to see how much each user has used either without going into details and adding them up.  How do I adjust my alerts without know how close each user is?  Good thing the Android app still shows the sums, but I'd prefer them here.

  • The video wasn't working for me yesterday, but is today, so I see where the details by device are supposed to popup, but aren't for me. Can someone tell me exactly where you're supposed to hover so device details come up? Is it in the circle, on the word details, or somewhere else? I've tried 3 browsers and two operating systems, but no luck so far. Maybe it won't work because I have too many devices.

  • I'd like to second Jeffrey's comment.  I would find the circle graphs more helpful if they started at 0 instead of showing just the portion of the current bucket.  Knowing that I've used 40% of my bucket doesn't help me as much as knowing that I'm 52% of the way to jumping to the next one - especially when I'm 50% of the way through my month.

I would also suggest a minor change to the device details page.  On and Off look too similar at a glance.  Can you change the text to Yes and No instead?  That would help out visually and also make a bit more sense from a user point of view.  In my mind I'm asking "Can this phone make calls?".  "Yes" is a clearer answer than "On".

  • I miss the predictions.

  • I would really like to have the visual presented to the current bill be the same when looking at older bills.

  • I love the efficiency of the new dashboard.  It's clean, simple and easy to read.  I do miss the bill predictions (based on past usage, this is how much we forecast your bill to be).  Those NEED to come back.  And one thing I would very much like to see in the future is the option for us of automatic payments -OR- manually paying our bill through, maybe the Bills page on the dashboard.  When I get paid, I always take care of rent and bills first, and like the option of manually paying my bill, so that I don't have to worry about waiting for days on end, to a week or more for the money to be docked out of my account.  I can rest easy knowing the bill is already paid, because I've manually paid it.  So yes, my main recommendation is to add the ability for customers to manually pay a bill through the dashboard.

  • I do not care for the new panel. Miss the old numbers for usage. Also, it is not showing the remainder of a credit I have on my account...Neither is the bill I downloaded.

  • The new format is messy in that it gives each individual call or text number.  I prefer the older, more general format.  Perhaps there's a way to toggle the display.  I guess I'll have to play with it.  Maybe there's even a way to configure preferences and I haven't found it yet.  I do not like the "improvements".

  • "I really liked having the current usage, expected usage, average usage, and max usage for each category displayed plainly. Very sad to see this feature gone." I agree with this completely. I liked everything about the old one. I do not find this one easier at all. The old meters were easier to read, the current/expected/average/max was vital to me, and I liked having all of the information right there in front of me.

  • The usage details were much better as expanding divs rather than page navigation.

  • I don't like it. What happened to avg usages/estimated usage/max usage?

  • I don't like losing the projected/average/max statistics. This was the most helpful feature - I looked at it every month. Please return it.

I'm not a fan of the new look, but I don't really care that much - mostly I would like the stats back - they were the most useful feature of the dashboard for me.

  • Sorry, but I really dislike the round graphics. Bar charts and graphs are far easier for me to read. Also, I really liked seeing the projected totals and the average and max usage all together on the dashboard. In fact, I used the previous dashboard layout to persuade a couple other people to switch to Ting. I just don't see how this is an improvement. :-(

  • I do like the new look, but miss the estimation on what my usage /  bill will come to this month.  I like the new breakdown of minutes, messages and megabytes used, I'd been wishing for something along those lines and am pleased to see it. The estimation of my usage was a feature I found very useful and I am going to miss that being readily available.

  • I like the old layout better. I could look at any device in my account and tell how much of anything they were doing.

  • Like Kyler, I miss having the current usage, expected usage, average usage, and max usage for each category ... also miss the "expected" total (based on current usage within the month ...)

  • Thanks so much for all the feedback everyone!

So you know, the new control panel is currently in its first version, with more improvements coming. Estimate is an example of a feature that can safely be listed as coming soon, but that didn't make it into the initial launch.

    Cheers!

  • Rob Lake, where do you get off with the statement "more improvements coming?"  You have replaced a very functional dashboard with a beta test and the majority of the comments have been pretty negative.  I do website design and maintenance and this is the wrong way to do it.  You should put the old site back up and treat this one as a beta site for comments and feedback.

  • I'd like to take this moment to make the time-honored complain that I liked the old one better. It was perfectly fine and this one is the kind of eyesore that reminds me of the new Microsoft products visual "appeal."

  • I think I preferred the old layout better. It seemed to provide more information at a glance, and without needing to scroll around and hover. Also, I liked the previous app better, but for only one reason. I loved how it would say "Your billing cycle ends Nov 15 (in X days)." That little days addition helps.

  • The side pane fonts could be bolder; they are harder to read from a glance right now.

  • Hey Richard!  Rob and I both work on the product management team, so every decision we make is to try to improve things for you and all of our customers.  There was a technical challenge with improving estimated usage, so it didn't make it into this iteration but will be back soon.  (As part of this, we're also working to add the same capability to both of the mobile apps, for folks who primarily rely on those as their primary dashboard.)  We really do appreciate your feedback and we (literally) spend every day working to make Ting better for you.
