Ting New Control Panel Feedback

Today we launched the new Ting control panel, designed to make managing your account even easier. We really hope you like it!

Has it resolved a problem you had with the control panel before? Great--we want to know. Did we take away something that you loved and used everyday? We want to know that too.

Let us know what you think in the comments below!

  • I liked the old setup because it showed what the next tier of usage would cost.  I always looked at that so I could gauge how thrifty I needed to be for the rest of the month so I didn't reach into the next cost level.

  • Hey Diane!  The next major version of the Android app (with the iOS app following shortly thereafter) will have both exact bill cycle end date, number of days remaining, and estimated usage and bill.  Figuring out how to get all the information you need at glance is a challenge we spend a lot of time trying to meet.  The upcoming version of Android has some really interesting solutions to that, and we're going to be taking advantage of those.

  • Meh. I really wish you'd put some effort into making your minutes and megabytes rates more rational.

  • I found the older version more helpful and easier to navigate.  This one seems like your trying to cram a bunch into a small space, but leaving out the larger picture.

  • its ok, but i too would like to see the actual numbers by the pie charts, and i miss the projected usage from the old dashboard.

  • I will have to see how it work's this month to see if I like it better than the pie, I like the look of this one so far. Thank you for trying to make more easier for tracking my usage!!

  • This one is okay. I kind of liked the old one I liked being able to see how much the next hit was going to cost me. Maybe they could add that part back.

  • Not diggin' the new look at all. Old one was much easier for old eyes to read and was very succinct

  • I like it. The visual dashboard showing % of use per S/M/L and proportion per family member is handy. Drilldown for details is a good way to keep the numbers handy but not in the way.

  • Personally I liked the old interface better. The current pie graph is OK to me (since it seems intuitive about going in a circle before going to the next tier), although I liked the speedometer too.

I've been with Ting for only five days, so I haven't really grown "attached" to the old interface and this lets me have a fresh look at both UI at once. Navigation and readability should be easy for the user, but the new UI doesn't do either as well as the old UI did:

    1) Account menu bar - Being able to navigate pages of the account from a horizontal menu bar felt far easier (doesn't require scrolling up/down to change pages), unlike the vertical menu bar layout of the new design. Users with lower resolutions will find the need to scroll up/down to change between popular pages an inconvenience.

    2) Usage Alerts - Usage Alerts page now appears counterintuitive to readability and it takes longer to process/read everything. Edit popup screen also doesn't feel as "linear" / straightforward at first glance compared to the old UI, but one positive outcome of the new design is that adding another "Do this to" (e.g. if you want to email or text an alert to several people at once) is easier now.

    3) Device Settings - The Details page for a selected device now requires two steps (must click on blue pencil first, then choose on/off) to toggle switches, instead of one step (simply toggle on/off).

    I hope this feedback helps.

  • The small pie charts under our data usage are incorrect.

We have two phones.  As of now, we've used 3mb of data.  The two small pie charts show as 100% and 50% - when you mouse over them, the 100% one says "2mb", while the 50% one says "1mb".  This doesn't make sense.  We did use 3mb, but the charts should show 67% and 33%, no?

  • Hey there Michael!  Thanks for bringing that to our attention - we'll be looking into it for sure.

  • I don't like the way that the percentages are shown in a circle now. The speedometer-type semicircle gauges made a lot more sense to me. Also, I don't like that the exact usage numbers are gone from the dials. I definitely looked at those more than the dials and now I have to hunt to find them. It's harder to get a sense of my usage this way. I would appreciate the option to switch back to dial gauges as opposed to circles.

  • I don't like the new one. I'd prefer if you changed it back to the gauge meters. As Lee says above it's harder to get a sense of my usage this way.

  • I like knowing what the next tier $ is, now I have to keep going back to rates page.  don't love it.  prefer knowing my estimated bill will be.  Current bill isn't very useful.

  • Others have already stated the both of these, but I would like to add my voice in support. I preferred the speedometer look to the current graphics. That being said, I really like Jeffrey Brandenburg's idea for merging the two. Secondly, I also miss having the "current/expected/average" numbers. I used them often for budgeting. Ting is great, keep on keeping on!

  • I am not favorably impressed.  One thing I cannot stand about services today--all of them--is the way they like to let their techies go wild and constantly redesign things.  Not that I was particularly fond of the speedometer design, but I got accustomed to it.  Now everything is different and I must reacquaint and reorient myself.  There is nothing new here that could not have been added to the old design.  I hate to say it, but I have also noticed that constant changes always seem to bring rate increases more frequently (is it to keep those techies paid for all the unnecessary extra work?).  Please, beta test before putting it on the site, find a working design and then LEAVE IT.

  • Not a fan of constant changing.I am a new member and it took me a couple of months to make this system work for me. Now I have to refigure and adjust to new graphs. Why the hassle I ask when I only signed up with Ting to keep in touch with my out of state daughter because she has a smart phone that works with your plan.  Morgan Johnson has it right !  I want the numbers and my daughter wants the speedometer. I would like to request the speedometer. back at least on my personal account. Give us a choice, its our money.

  • I really like the new look, however, I do need to be able to see each devices total still. I'm assuming this feature is still planning on being added back in. Thanks!

  • I actually like the previous display better. Seemed more informative, especially miss the numerical display below the old meters.

  • I do like the breakdown on one screen instead of the previous separate account usage and device usage pages, however having the actual numbers were more important to me than the percentage graph. I realize the data is available on mouse over but I want to see it in numbers and all at once. Also I would very much like the ability to look at the nice usage overview for previous months. Thanks!

  • Prefer the old speedometer view which I understand more easily 'at a glance'.

  • The form is less important to me than the function.  The new format is okay but it's hard to compare without seeing both side by side.  The old way apparently gave me what I needed because I don't recall having had any complaints about it.

One minor quibble over the main page:  There is too much going on at the top of the screen and I have to scroll down to see the info below the graphs.  I'd rather have a "snapshot" display where I didn't have to scroll.

One issue I do have is with the data under details.  Since I first signed up with Ting, I have been copying the detail data from the web page and then pasting into a spreadsheet I created for parsing and sorting and ultimately getting to minutes, messages, and megabytes per line.  Currently the data sometimes displays the words "incoming call" in front of the phone number whereas all other lines display any text (including City) AFTER the phone number.  Having words before the phone number keeps my spreadsheet from working for those line items.  Suggestion:  Either lose the words "incoming call" as they are not needed anyway since the phone number is clearly in the "From" column or place all text after the phone number to make it easier for my spreadsheet to capture the data I need.

  • I like the Current Usage screen's ability to drill down into the details of the calls, texts, and data usage.  I might be the only geek who wants this, but I would like the ability to export the detailed data to a CSV or Excel file so that I can get a better handle on my usage.

  • The new look is OK, but as many others have said the information isn't all there anymore.

I want to see real usage numbers next to (or instead of) the little pie charts for each person. I want estimates back (sounds like it's in process, good!), and I really want the current/next tier costs on there so I can see where my usage may end up. Speedo vs. circle is meh IMHO, both are equally understandable.

I do like that drill down information is now displayed as most recent first instead of oldest first.

  • I prefer being able to see the exact number of minutes, messages and megabytes  in numbers vs. percentages used by each device.

  • I love the pie charts!  Now I can quickly find which of my four users is the guilt party for single-handedly driving-up our data usage.  I too, vote for putting the 'estimated bill' back on the page.  The bottom line, after all, is why we're all members of Ting.

    Keep up the good work!
