Ting New Control Panel Feedback

Today we launched the new Ting control panel, designed to make managing your account even easier. We really hope you like it!

Has it resolved a problem you had with the control panel before? Great--we want to know. Did we take away something that you loved and used everyday? We want to know that too.

Let us know what you think in the comments below!

  • I must agree with David. Ting knows how to do this properly. They had the Ting Army test the last major change and they phased it in gradually, after all the bugs were worked out of the new interface. Ting owes us an explanation for this non-Tinglike behavior.

  • I miss the old dashboard, much easier to understand! Also, harder to figure out how far along you are in the minutes category.

  • I love the (subtle but useful) changes so far. I don't seem to have to dig/click around quite as much to manage my account/ devices. Thanks!

  • I think it's been made pretty clear that the one feature most people want to see from Ting is subtotals of minutes, messages, and megabytes PER each line on the account and to have this information show up on the bill detail.  I created a spreadsheet to do this but it's becoming harder to get good results as the format for each line of data is inconsistent (see my previous post in this thread).

  • To DC,

I see your point about copying current usage into a spreadsheet. Maybe the columns should be as follows:

Date         Time            Device              Number                 Out/In                Duration              Surcharges

I think that would make your spreadsheets work better. Also, the text "mins" could be left off and the spreadsheet should convert that to a number for easier totals. I don't know how you do it now, but it looks cumbersome at best.

  • Hey Paul,

It is a bit cumbersome but has been working well until the latest changes.  My spreadsheet works as long as the From and To data begins with the 10 digit phone number.  I use the =Left() function in Excel to extract the phone number.  This only works when the data does not begin with text.  Unfortunately, with the latest changes, some phone number data is displaying the text "incoming" before the number.  This breaks my spreadsheet and requires manual manipulation of that line item.

As far as minutes, I use this formula to remove the text (=VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(F1," mins","")) where "F1" is the cell containing the minute data extracted from the website.  This only works because so far the only text after the value is a space and then "mins".

It would be so much better if all I had to do is enter subtotals from the bill into my spreadsheet for a simple cost allocation.

Although I originally said "per each line", as Bruce pointed out in another thread, it would be more accurate to say we want the subtotals per device.

  • I can't make any sense out of the new "look". The speedometer gauges made sense, showed the needed data, showed the plan options. Now I'm not finding any of that, short of downloading each PDF, after the fact. I see references to the smart phone app still retaining some of the old details/displays, but that does squat diddly for those of us who've given up smart phones and gone back to regular old "feature" phones. I'm disappointed by what I see. I understand the desire of change, etc... but perhaps an option in Account Settings to pick the view we'd prefer? I assume the underlying data set is unchanged, so why not make the views like skins (like the ones for WinAmp, back before it was so horribly murdered) where the customer can select the view that works best for them? Given the abilities of modern web tools, browsers, etc... this doesn't seem like it would be a challenge (just don't do it in java, ain't nobody that needs that $h17!). Thanks for taking the time to read this and consider my opinions/suggestions.

    Long live the Ting!

  • I've added a Feature Request to have usage by device show up on bills:  https://help.ting.com/entries/102548643-Show-Usage-By-Device-On-Bills

If you want this feature, please follow the link and "Like" the request.

    Thanks,

  • To DC,

Thanks for sending in the request. I too have requested it.  I noticed that the feature was first requested about two years ago. Maybe we can get it on the front burner.

Regarding the spreadsheets. Are you interested in analyzing usage only for the current month or for past months?  Just wondering if you have used the downloadable .csv files and what you thought of them.  I download them every month to get device usage totals and have worked reasonably well. I only wish they would include the device nicknames in all the files and not just the minutes file.  Another feature request I sent in.

  • Paul,

I first built my spreadsheet before csv files were made available.  When I looked at the very first one, there were issues that required me to extensively re-write my spreadsheet.  However, I just took another look at the latest csv file and I think it is in a format that is much better than the website data and will be easier to manipulate.  I'll still have to re-write my spreadsheet but it won't be that bad.  Thanks for the prompt to take another look.

  • Just loaded my dashboard and Presto - they have device totals and usage by device - no clicking required. Looks great so far.

    Thank you TING!!

  • Suggestions after looking for more than a few seconds.

Remove the words "Current Usage" since its already implied and it takes up too much space.

Move the "refer a friend" block to the left panel. I'll still see it.

Now you can move the charts up quite a bit.

Show all the devices, not just the top five.

Default sort by nickname so I can look across and see the same device in all columns.

Make the columns sortable so I can then get the top device usage if I choose to.

Round all megabytes to the nearest megabyte instead of the hundredth. I realize it might not total correctly due to rounding.

I appreciate changing the device page settings to Enabled/Disabled. It's better than On/Off, but not much. Just bring back the checkboxes. It's much easier to see an empty versus checked box.

Thanks again for the device totals.

  • Thank you Paul!

For everyone who hasn't seen it yet, we've made our first round of updates to the new control panel. The biggest changes:

-accounts with more than 5 devices will see the top 5 devices by usage on the Current Usage page with the option to view all in each category

-the pie charts have been replaced with the actual usage number - on hover, this number will show the percentage this represents of the whole

There have been additional bug fixes and small UI improvements on top of that, as well.

  • Looks pretty good to me.  One small bug:  When I hover over the individual devices under Megabytes, the percentages all show as 0%.  Works fine for Minutes and Messages, though.

  • Hi Alvin!  Not silly.  The last item in the blue menu bar on the left side of the page is Sign Out.  Cheers!

  • When you're on "your account" look to the far left and you will see eight selections in blue. The first one is "current usage" and the last one is "sign out" (which will log you out of your account).

  • Ting:  What's with changing the date format in the CSV's to a strange, unrecognizable format?  They were correctly formatted through Sep 28 as "September 28, 2014".  On Sep 29 they changed to "Sep/29/2014".

WHERE IN THE WORLD did you come up with that format!?

If you use forward slashes as date delimiters, the month needs to be expressed as a digit.  This is breaking almost anything that tries to summarize on a date range (e.g. Excel, or in my case Google Fusion tables).

  • Looking good.  But, I agree with Paul Lair that the "Refer a friend" banner should be moved.  Doing so would allow me to see everything without scrolling down.  In addition to Paul's suggestion, you could move it to the same level as the "Current usage" header but put it over to the right.

I also agree with David Frailey regarding the CSV date format.  For some reason, even if I copy and paste without formatting into my own spreadsheet, the weird date format overrides my format.  It seems that the format is a text format and nothing I do, short of retyping the date will put it into any proper date format.  Strange.  I use Excel.

  • Feature Request/Comment:  CSV export of minutes/texts/megabytes.

Would be great for those of us who are tallying usage/etc, if the usage logs can be exported as timestamped CSV files with selectable ranges.

Otherwise, LOVE the new dashboard: clean, fast, and just plain works.

    No content at all.

  • The dials are not showing accurate proportions. For example, our minutes are at 271 of the 500 allotted for the current level, but the dial hasn't passed the halfway mark. I am attaching the screenshot that shows the issue.  If this glitch can be overcome, the new control panel's look and feel are fine. Thanks for having this place for feedback.
