HTC 510 Desire Removed from Ting Store

Just noticed that the HTC 510 Desire has been removed from the Ting Store.  This comes soon after the posted availability date shifted from November 12th to December 5th, just this past Friday.  Any clarification on this from the Ting Staff?  Any impact on those that have already ordered devices a month ago?

  • Good eye Anthony. Truth is, our batch order of HTC 510's to our warehouse won't make the expected arrival date, which sadly, pushes the ship date back for your order. We feel awful and we're going to follow up with each customer the second we have more information to pass along, by the end of the month.

We hope our email notification found your inbox last week. If you have any questions about your pre-order, please feel free to talk us. Again, sincere apologies for the delay.

  • But will the phone be sold again once it becomes available, or has it been dropped entirely?

  • Good question and I meant to ask it myself.  I'm starting to get the distinct feeling that Ting's hardware offerings are a side-line, moving target type of business center.

Just noticed that the LG G3 has gone missing from the Shop Ting page as well.  Poof !

Suggestion Box:  Announcements would be good on these types of things, especially with the holidays coming up.  Wouldn't it be better to give a status change under the device in the Store instead of simply letting devices go MIA?  As a side note, having Carrie as a "highlighted" contributor on the Ting Blog, where she is clearly managing the Store's web space, is almost ironically timed.

  • Hi Wesley!  The phone will come back to the store when we have them in stock.

Anthony, we are expecting to have the G3 available soon.  Thank you for the feedback, as well.  We would be pleased to have you submit a feature request to that effect, with any specifics you might like!

  • Anthony asked:  "Wouldn't it be better to give a status change under the device in the Store instead of simply letting devices go MIA?"

Yes it would which is why I've been suggesting it for over 2 years.  Seems a no brainer to me.  I'd link to my previous comments on the subject but this site makes it difficult to search by user.

  • I was just looking to see when the Desire would ship,  I ordered mine about a month ago, and bummer it's delayed.  Also I hadn't seen the email, but I just went through my inbox and found the notice from Ting from 11/7 which I must've overlooked.  Just blah because though my LG Optimus S has been literally one of the best phones I've ever owned the battery has started to perform horribly and several of the apps I use and need to use are no longer supported on Android 2.2.

  • I recently bought an HTC Desire 510 from boost and unfortunately It won't work with BYOD. Is there any possibility it could be added later? Or does the phone just not work?

  • Not likely. Sprint does not allow BYOD of Boost or Virgin Mobile phones since Sprint owns those companies and considers other Sprint MVNOs as competitors to them.

  • Hey Jacob,

We usually have to wait 1 year to BYOD Sprint phones, but we can't BYOD Boost devices, so your best bet is to return that one as we won't be able activate it.

  • Already tried the Sprint prepaid one unfortunately. I guess I'm out of luck.

  • December 5 has come and gone. Will the 510 be back in stock in time to ship for Christmas?

  • Hey Berner,

The HTC Desire inventory has been constrained so it won't be back on our shop at least until early in the new year. We might have an update at that time, but still don't know if we'll have enough units to have it back for sale.  We've also been communicating with customers that already placed orders as those are being shipped as soon as we receive those units.

  • Hi Ting,

So I placed an order for a blue one. Since it's on backorder, can I change it to a black one? I want it in black. Not blue. Please, thank you.

  • Hey there Marco, We don't have the Desire available in black. If this device becomes available in other colors before we can fulfill the pending orders we will give users like yourself the option to trade.

  • So is the HTC 510 Desire listed in the Ting shop for $155 different from the "Sprint prepaid" one sold by Amazon for $84?

  • Hey there Paul, they make look the same, but Sprint prepaid devices aren't listed in our database so we cannot activate them on Ting. Keep an eye on our supported device list for updates.

  • I got my Desire 510 from Ting.  Only one big problem (curse you, HTC).  The 4 GB memory is filled with bloatware that can not be deleted or even disabled.  And I really object to Facebook being among them, and it is using the network.  I want this spyware to be gone.

I put in a 16 GB SD card which at least lets me put a big dictionary app and AnkiDroid decks on there, and music if I want.  But other than those and the basic mail/web/maps stuff, this thing can't be anything more than - a phone.  I have 472 MB free.  If anyone knows a way to load apps onto the external card, I would be happy to hear about it.

Rooting would let me solve the bloatware problem, but there does not seem to be a root procedure for this device yet.  The 64-bit CPU may have something to do with it.

One trick I learned: app upgrades always add on to what is there - so "deleting upgrades" of an app will restore it to its original size.  I have done this to Chrome and Google+.

  • I found this technique for moving apps to the SD card, which seems to work for those apps that allow moving.

  • This Hunk 'o Junk should be removed permanantly. 4GB Internal filled with unmovable crapware with no room for updates. The designer should be flogged.
