Porting Ting number to Google voice

Has anyone ported a number from Ting to google voice? I believe should be possible, I would like to hear from folks who have actually done it.

Here is my scenerio: I am currently in the process of migrating my T-mobile family plan to Ting, purchasing devices as the budget allows. We also have an Earthlink VOIP number that I would like to port to Goggle voice then set that up to forward to our other lines. As I understand it, GV cannot port a VOIP number so what I am planning on doing is to port the Earthlink number to Ting then porting it to Google. I realize that process would take several days. Any comments?

  • Your process is the correct way to do it BUT no 100% guarantee that it will work. Some mobile numbers are not supported for various reasons.

After you port the Earthlink number to Ting you can see if it will be accepted for porting to GV here https://www.google.com/voice/b/0/porting

Before attempting the port you might give it 5 days first to propagate the system as mobiles allow texting and landlines don't (_VoIP is considered a landline in the phone worl_d).

  • I did check that site but every number that I enter gives a oops message. I tried numbers from T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon and at least six different area codes. So I don't think their tool is very reliable.

  • Is there anything else in the oops messages other than the word oops?

  • I have successfully ported my old Sprint number to ting on a spare phone that i activated, then I activated my old sprint photon with ting and got a new phone number (all is working well).  I was going to ask ting to switch my old number back to my photon and deactivate my spare phone but now i think i would like to port my old number (now on ting) to GV. Is this going to be a problem?  When i go to GV to do the port it looks like the phone is with sprint and asks me for an account to port from. Should a wait 5 days as Robin suggests?  Is my phone number the ting account number?

  • It shouldn't be a problem (though I haven't personally tried porting from Ting myself).

Yes, GV will show it as Sprint -- it always shows the underlying carrier. You don't need to wait 5 days, that was for the OP's original port to Ting from Earthlink to settle. The account number you need to get from Ting (just call and ask).

Be prepared for SMS to not work for a little while after the port. My port into GV last year took exactly 24 hours to complete voice, and 3 days to complete SMS, but I've heard it's gotten faster since then.

  • It's still taking 3-5 days in most cases for the SMS to settle.

And just in case it's important to you, Google voice doesn't support MMS, short code or email to SMS gateway.

You can still use the native Ting number assigned to your handset for that though.

  • A beta app that somewhat adds the ability to send images through your Google Voice number.  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=robj.send.itpro&hl=en

  • Did porting your Ting number over to Google Voice effect your Ting account at all? I just ported my number to Ting from Sprint, and that cancels your account with Sprint. I want to now port that number over to Google Voice so I can use it on the GV and GrooveI IP apps which will allow me to call and text using wi-fi, but I'm worried that it will effect my Ting account.

  • Porting your number closes the account... that is just how it works.  I used another old sprint phone (#2)  i had laying around and brought it over to Ting to temporarily hold my account with Ting, ported my number to GV (which de-activated my #1), I then reactivated my #1 phone with Ting and got a new number, canceled my #2 phone with Ting, and pointed my GV# to my new phone number for my #1 Ting phone.

It did take a couple of days and it seems like a lot of work, but it was worth it to save as much as i am saving with Ting!

  • I'm trying to port a Ting # to GV as well but not having any luck. GV asks for my Sprint account info, which obviously I don't have bc the # is on Ting, not Sprint. How did everyone else work around this?

  • I emailed Ting customer support for what to put in the GV online form and the told me.

  • Thanks for the tip, John. I emailed Ting and they got back to me with "Sprint" account info that I could enter into GV. Number just finished porting today, and it was super easy.

  • I'd like to update this thread for others that search and come across this, but it appears that back in March, Google announced they are ultimately getting rid of Google Voice and merging into Google Hangouts. I was all about porting my # to GV until I came across that article; I will be holding off as until further notice I'm not sure what will happen.
