how to get texts to google voice to only go to gv and not sprint too

When texts are sent to google voice they go to sprint too! The gv texts are free over wifi, but the spint ones aren't.

Is there a way to only have them go to gv? I've got a galaxy SII.

thx!

  • First have your contact use your GV number to send text.

Turn off Text in your Ting settings

In the phones tab of your GV settings https://www.google.com/voice#phones don't select the option

  • thx Robin! So, set up that way, that would mean that I will only get texts if I have wifi, right? (or if the text goes to my sprint number)

  • As long as you have wireless data disabled, yes you'll only get texts when you're on wifi. If you have wireless data enabled, they'll come in over the data network.

  • Has anybody found a better app for GV texting? I find the GV app really poor for this.

    Thx

  • There is an app on the Google Play store that says it will let you use the native messaging client on your phone for GV. I've never used it, though so I have no idea if it works. You might check it out, though. I think it wasn't free, something like $5,

I'm not familiar with the apk that Kevin mentioned either.

With GV apk installed I see no difference in messaging with one or the other. If you access contacts and hit the messaging icon next to the contact's name the jump screen gives a choice to complete action with one or the other and the GUI is the same from there.

If it's the fact that GV is only WiFi or data capable that's a little tougher to deal with but there is a trick.

First you have to receive a message to your native android app that has been sent to your GV number by your contact, Your contact will have a strange number. save that number for replies to appear to come from your Google number when sent from the native messaging app when you don't have WiFi or data to send through the GV app.

For those that want to know what that strange number is on your bill when your using the GV apk on your Android. Google Voice uses "direct access numbers" skipping the need to forward the number you were dialing to Google Voice’s servers. This feature makes connecting outgoing calls quicker by skipping the Google server altogether and forgoing your phone’s data connection. And while this addition definitely enhances the way the app functions, making it feel more like placing a traditional telephone call,

  • Here's what I was talking about: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mdrtools.apps.gvintegration&hl=en

I want to stress that I know next to nothing about it, I just happened upon it searching for other stuff. It may not do anything special at all, I haven't looked in to it much.
