Switching from Native SMS to Google Voice

Has anyone found an app or easy way to switch the GV setting that allows texts to be forwarded to a phone.  I'm using GrooveIP and AutoAir to accomplish this seamlessly for calls, but haven't found a good way to do this for SMS.

Thoughts?

  • I'm not aware of any way to automatically enable/disable GV text forwarding. An alternative (what I do) is to leave text forwarding disabled and always use the Google Voice app for texting. It'll work over Wi-Fi when connected and the cellular network when not connected to Wi-Fi. Using this method means you never have to pay for texts.

  • David:

Not automatically but besides using the settings when your logged in on a browser you can toggle in the GV apk from Settings/Sync and notifications/  "Receive Text Messages" from the GV app. Not very convenient for switching like AutoAir is for the phone to GrooVe IP

  • AutoAir works by toggling the radios in the phone, so Google Voice can always forward calls to both the cell network and any connected VoIP clients, and whichever answers first gets the call. No GV settings are being changed, and calls will always come through. That trick can't be used for SMS, because the cell network will just queue any received texts until the phone's cell radio is back on.

If you lose access to both WiFi and cell data (such as by roaming), there's no way to access the GV settings to change where texts go, which makes reliable toggling impossible.

So my own conclusion was that it doesn't even make sense to do. Maybe if GV had a way to change settings via SMS or something...

  • I'm pretty sure the browser is the only way to change that setting. As Trevor mentioned, the only practical reason I could think of for that ability would be if you spent enough time roaming, that you needed texts to come over SMS instead of GV using data on the cell network. Because as long as you're not roaming, you'll still receive texts via the GV app.
