How do you add Google Vocie to your phone?

I am an Android newbie, having been an iPhone user for the past 3 1/2 years. I already have a GV account (had for several years as a number to give when online forms force you to give a number ...) Anyway, I have been trying to figure out how to set it up for my phone (Optium S refurb) and can't seem to figure it out.

Could someone please give me step by step simplified directions?

Thanks!

  • So far I have been able to figure out that you will also need IP Groove (I'm trying the "light" version (free) and it seems to work fine) in order to make GV work on Wifi. After that, I'm a little unclear if you're supposed to make your calls from IP Groove or from GV. So, other than knowing IPG is also important, I'm waiting for some of the same detail you need.

  • How do you want to use Google Voice? Or, how did you use it on your iPhone?

There are several options ranging from "voicemail service for my phone when people call my Ting number" to "use the GV number for everything and make free calls on wifi", so knowing exactly what you want is important to answering the question :)

  • Dayum not being able to edit, I realize that the links I posted aren't an answer, I'm injecting with Trevor Talbot's answer.  that the answer depends upon your desired usage and I provided the links for you to better describe what you want to do.

  • Hi all,

Sorry it took me awhile to get back here. I would want to use GV for both calling and texting - so basically for everything, although I'd still want the ability to use it as a regular phone when away from Wi Fi. I don't currently have it on my iPhone because I have more minutes than I'll ever use on my plan. The only reason I have a GV # is for a number to put on online forms which force you to give them a phone #. I looked at my GV account and can't see how to add it to my phone.

This may be a moot point though, because one of my most used and favorite features of the iPhone - Telenav, which I pay $10/yr for voiced turn by turn directions - I can't seem to find a similarly priced equivalent for Android. Someone told me about Navigation - but I haven't looked into it yet to see if it works on an MVNO Sprint phone AND has voiced turn by turn directions. I am majorly directionally challenged.

  • When Google learns how to write instructions that aren't a convoluted mess, and have help that isn't an endless circle of angry users, I will try GV again.
