GV setting "Use GV for all calls" dramatically reduces battery life to about 7 hours

I have a new Samsung Galaxy Victory. I use Google Voice on it with GrooveIP. I recently changed the GV setting to "Use GV for all calls." I thought this would happen only when there's a Wi-Fi connection. Anyway, my battery started discharging at an incredible rate. After about 7 hours, it'd be down to 2%, and the battery settings indicated that "Phone" was consuming 25% of the battery, even more than "Android OS" at 23%.

When I changed that setting back to "Don't use GV to make calls," the usage went back to normal.

Does anyone have an idea of what's going on here? (It's academic because I'm going to use GrooveIP if I want to use VoIP to make a call, but I'm still curious.) Thanks.

  • Sorry. I did mention it's the Samsung Galaxy Victory, but I neglected to post the O/S version, which is 4.0.4.

  • I just got the LG Marquee and enabled that setting.  I haven't noticed any serious battery problems, although the battery it comes with doesn't last very long.  I think the phone is just kind of buggy that way, since my old Droid X has almost the same size battery, same specs, a bigger screen and had much better battery life.  Is it the phone idle or cell standby that is consuming the largest amount of battery, or does it just say "phone"?  I'm curious if the problem has continued to happen if you have the setting enabled.  Have you tried again?

  • I haven't bothered trying again, since I don't need that setting. (I use GrooveIP.) The app listed in Battery Usage just says "Phone." "Device Idle" and "Cell Standby" are separate entries.

  • I was curious if you tried again.  I'm also using Google Voice and Groove IP and I do have the setting enabled on my phone because I am only using the google voice number for calls, whether over Groove IP or over cell when I'm not at home.  I'll report if I see any major problems.
