Any hope for Sprint level GV integrating for Ting?

I LOVE the current integration GV and Sprint have.  Very little setup, seamless connection and only one phone number.  I also understand that this is solely limited to Sprint and that no other carriers have this.  Is there any hope ting will be able to achieve this as well?

I can't wait to switch to ting, but this may be the ONLY thing I will miss.

  • I'll leave the contract explanations to the guys at Tucows Ting

But I'll explain how to transition from Sprint to Ting and retain pratically the same level of integration.

You have been using the Sprint integration and this allowed you to use your mobile number as your GV number. If keeping the Mobile number is what matters then you will need to port it to GV.

    1. First add another phone as a forwarding phone to your Google voice account.
    2. Disable or disconnect your Sprint and GV integration that you have setup. If you have the sprint-gv sync activated you can't get the interface to port your number.
    3. Go through the porting process. Ensure you have access to your mobile phone and have service so that you can receive an automated call from Google to enter the authentication code.
4.wait 24 hours and all should be good!

Then install the GV app and set it up to use for all calls.

  • Thanks for the replays.

I understand I can port my current number to GV and just have it auto forward to my new ting number. The downside being that my 'real' number is new and my current number exists as a piece of software in California(or wherever), and if GV is down for whatever reason then none of my calls would come through.  Also, EVERY call I receive comes through GV.  The major downside being the native dialer in the phone only dials out with the phones number, not my legacy number.

The point being, if I make a call now using Sprint my phone functions just like a normal phone does, but I also get those calls to my Nexus 7 and I can use Groove IP and the Voice app to supplement my phone and everything appears to be my cell phone, this seamless integration is ONLY possible on Sprint right now.

  • When you have your cell phone number ported to Google Voice you set up the Voice app on the phone to make all or some of your calls. The Voice app integrates with the Dialer. If you make the call using the Voice app the person you call will see your ported number.

  • Just to make sure, you are saying the voice app overrides the stock dialer and any outgoing call will be routed through GV?  On the android phone you hit the phone button, dial the number and the person on the other end see's you GV number on their caller ID?

  • Yes that is correct. I have two phones and it works well. If you have a Google Voice number you can test it out. I would set up a dedicated Gmail account for Google Voice. I can't remember exactly how I came to that but I spent a lot of time working at it.
