I recently changed from Sprint to Ting. In the process, I thought that I'd port my old Sprint number to Google Voice, so that I didn't have to give out my new Ting number, and could take advantage of some of the Google Voice features, like web-based texting, and voicemail transcription. In doing so, I ran into a myriad of problems.
Porting my number to Google Voice took 5 days, when they say it should be done within 24 hours.
After porting, I received multiple calls from people that were trying to reach numbers that were nothing like mine.
A friend tried to call my number, and was routed to some random person that neither of us knew.
I got a call, it showed the caller ID to be a friend's number, but when I picked it up, it was yet another random person.
Eventually, after all this, I decided that the Google Voice features weren't worth the hassle, and decided to port my number from Google Voice to Ting (I should have just ported from Sprint to Ting to begin with). Google Voice approved the port out, and then cancelled the request, before actually releasing my number to Ting. In the process, my number somehow got deactivated, so nobody could reach me.
Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this story. After a few phone calls and a lot of emails, the folks in the Ting support department were able to get my number back, and activate it on my account.
