A word of caution about Google Voice

I recently changed from Sprint to Ting.  In the process, I thought that I'd port my old Sprint number to Google Voice, so that I didn't have to give out my new Ting number, and could take advantage of some of the Google Voice features, like web-based texting, and voicemail transcription.  In doing so, I ran into a myriad of problems.

  1. Porting my number to Google Voice took 5 days, when they say it should be done within 24 hours.

  2. After porting, I received multiple calls from people that were trying to reach numbers that were nothing like mine.

  3. A friend tried to call my number, and was routed to some random person that neither of us knew.

  4. I got a call, it showed the caller ID to be a friend's number, but when I picked it up, it was yet another random person.

Eventually, after all this, I decided that the Google Voice features weren't worth the hassle, and decided to port my number from Google Voice to Ting (I should have just ported from Sprint to Ting to begin with).  Google Voice approved the port out, and then cancelled the request, before actually releasing my number to Ting.  In the process, my number somehow got deactivated, so nobody could reach me.

Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this story. After a few phone calls and a lot of emails, the folks in the Ting support department were able to get my number back, and activate it on my account.

  • Hi Eric,

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate turn of events with Google Voice.  Glad it turned out well for you in the end.

I did exactly what you did.  However, my number port was completed at about 22 hours from the original time it was submitted.

    It transferred without a hitch.

Anyway. . . welcome to Ting!

  • I also switched from Sprint to Google Voice.. and want to now just move my number from Google Voice to Ting, but how do I do that?

How do you request to port your number from google voice to ting?  In the online "use existing number" form, there is nowhere for me to put my google voice info. Do I have to call in to Ting to get it done? or is there an automated way to do this?

  • It's under account settings / devices / then the phone name your want to port a number to.

Remember to unlock your Google number before initiating the port and your Google account number is your ten digit phone number.

according to the porting information most ports complete within 5 days.

Or you could just use your Ting phone as a forwarding phone and leave your Google number on Google and take advantage of the Google Voice management tool functions.

  • My port experience was the same as Joe's. It took about 22 to 23 hours, no issues at all for the 2 numbers ported.

  • One thing that has not been mentioned about porting your number to Ting by using Google Voice that I have learned is that these numbers are seen as landline numbers so they can take up to 7 days to complete.  If I had know that I would have left the number in GV.   It's been 5 days and still not done yet, I expect it will take the full 7 days to finish.

  • Also, not all numbers can be ported to Google.  Certain areas of the country can't.  Before you do a lot of planning, check on Google Voice website to see if your number is eligible to be ported. You just type your number in.  For example, my number could be ported to Ting but not Google.  You will need to go to Google Voice, log in and then check your current number: (they don't make it very easy to check)

Your mobile number can not be ported at this time.
    - This number appears to be from an area we don't currently support for porting."

  • For the record, I put in 2 port requests (google voice -> ting) on the 18th(Fri) and one finished on the 21st (Mon) and the other finished on the 23rd (Wed).

So for me, it took ~3 and ~5 days to complete (including weekends).

  • It took 7 days, almost to the hour, to get the number ported frm GV to ting, but it eventually got done.  I am not sure if GV ever responded to tings requests, but that is the risk in dealing with a free service from Google, the customer support is horrible.
