Google Voice number not ringing on Ting device

I have setup my Ting number as a "Forward Calls to" number in Google Voice.  When someone calls the GV number, however, the caller gets a message "This call cannot be completed as dialed...".  If I call the GV number from my Ting phone, I am successfully connected to my GV voicemail.

Is there something in the Ting settings that I am missing?  I do not have any of the forwarding options checked in my Ting options.  I don't want my calls forwarded from my Ting number to GV.  I do want to keep my Ting voicemail and my GV voicemail separate.  I do not want to port my Ting number to GV or my GV number to Ting; I just want calls forwarded from GV to my Ting phone.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • That actually sounds like something wrong on the caller's end. Is this a new GV number?

If GV has trouble reaching your phone, it should be dumping the caller to voicemail, not giving them an error message.

  • Thanks, Trevor.  It is a GV number that I've just been using for web-based access to texting up until this point.  I've tested inbound callers from AT&T, Verizon, and Net10.

I've also just now added my work line to the GV forwarding, with the same "Your call cannot be completed..." message, so it must be an issue on the Google side.  :-(

  • That's really bizarre, especially since you are able to call it yourself. Inbound and outbound texting works fine? If your work line is non-Sprint/Ting, can you call the GV number from it? What happens if you turn on Do Not Disturb and have someone call?

Some browsing through the Google forums suggest it's sometimes a switching issue where the number doesn't propagate correctly, so various carriers can't actually figure out how to route it, and generate that message. You might try starting with the GV Help thing and see if you can get to a place to report it as a problem.

I currently have access to Sprint and Verizon cell lines, and can sometimes do Qwest landlines, if another test caller would help. You can email me to set that up.

  • I had gone through the GV troubleshooter and it suggested that I report the issue in the GV forums.  I posted there, but with no response, I thought I'd submit the question here as well.  I recently found a thread in the GV forums with folks reporting the identical issue, so I've added a me-too there.

Your do-not-disturb test sounded interesting, so I tried it, but still got the error message from my Net10 phone.

  • Clinton:

Try removing the Ting phone, wait a few hours and then add it back.

  • Yeah, it looks like an issue with getting calls routed to the GV number, it has nothing to do with your forwarding phones. You'll have to find a way to get either Google or a problem carrier to investigate. For problem carriers, just say you can't call that number but your friends on Sprint can.

The only other option that comes to mind is paying the number change fee for GV to get a new number.
