Trouble setting up Google Voice

Hello All,

I have an LG Optimus G, just activated yesterday.  Previously, I was using Google Voice on my Sprint HTC Hero as the default voicemail service.  I'd like to use the same setup now that I'm on Ting, but I've run into a roadblock.

In the setup process, GV gives me a number to call in order to activate voicemail on the phone.  When I try to dial the number to (*28...) I get the message: "The feature code you entered is not valid."  The phone number is listed in my Google Voice settings on the web (it is the same number as my previous phone with Sprint.)

I don't see an settings on my Optimus G that allow me to change the voicemail service.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get this working correctly?

  • Ting recommends using the device settings from your account dashboard to set call forwarding on the phone.

  • Thanks, but I have the "Call Forwarding can be set on phone" box checked and I still receive the same message when I call the number that Google recommends for setting up voicemail.

Do settings changes happen automatically when they're made on an account, or do I need to do some kind of update on my phone?

  • You don't need to enter the *28 from the dashboard.

  • Actually the best pratice since this is technically a prepay. Set up a full Google Voice account first.

Then "downgrade" to Google Lite, all you need to do is add Google Voice voicemail service for your cell phone on the Phones tab in settings (gear icon) or https://www.google.com/voice#phones .

Then disable call forwarding by removing the check marks from your forwarding phones, also on the Phones tab.

If you gave your Google Voice number to any contacts, tell them not to use it, and don't give your Google Voice number out to anybody.

  • And I essentially said to follow the GV directions in settings... scratch that.

Bbut disable the phone as noted and add the forwarding in your Ting dashboard by  entering your GV number without the *28

  • Here is a thread with Ting support discussing the forwarding issue.

I agree with what Ben Lucier says about giving out the Google number and forwarding it to your Ting phone instead of Ting to Google for voicemail.

  • I hope I understand correctly.  Rather than activating the Google voicemail on my phone as I had previously done on sprint, I should set up google voice minus the voicemail and instead set up call forwarding in the Ting dashboard? If I do this will it bypass the sprint voicemail in all instances?

I see the point about forwarding from google voice to ting and not the other way around, but I like the flexibility of having my voicemail in google as opposed the the sprint voicemail.

  • Calls to Google Voice would absolutely have  your voicemail in Google.

Anyhow. when you set up forwarding , be sure your setting up "forward no answer" and "forward busy signal" calls and turn off voicemail.
