Problems with Groove IP

I have GV and Groove IP, with 20 megs cable internet and apple airport extreme router and  have calling problems over wifi even after changing some settings. Coming in I'll hear little bit static, delayed voice. Going out the caller complains of long pause, broken/choppy voice.

Settings I have on are: basic echo canceler, echo tail auto detect, speaker volume 2, microphone gain -2, keep screen on, audio processing, mic buffer small, mic source auto detect.

  • Google Voice only uses the G.711 mu-law Voice over IP codec, which is designed for wired, not wireless (WiFi) IP use, and does not use compression to save bandwidth.  Hence, it depends on sending a clear, clean stream of data over a reliable connection.  It will break up and distort often over WiFi, because it assumes a relatively robust, low-latency connection, and it can't easily recover from WiFi issues.  Talkatone and GrooveIP can't do much about this, and call quality will be unreliable.

  • I should mention I have 2 LG Marquee with the same problems, it's in airplane mode with wifi on, automatic brightness and optimized brightness(not power saving). phone shows strong wifi signal. lot of people seem to have good luck with Groove IP. I also get numerous dropped calls. When I end the call it quickly says "detected eco setting 300 " if that matters.

  • That makes sense. I have tried groove a few times and experienced dropped calls even sitting right next to my wifi router.
