Swapping GV and Ting numbers

My wife and I have used GV for over a year as our main phone numbers.  We use it as our primary texting app and forward our calls to and from GV through our Ting numbers. We have been living with no MMS to our GV numbers thinking that by this time for sure it would be supported.

Long story short, we are tired of needing to give people a 2nd number for MMS or explaining that we didn't get the MMS. Now I am going to try and swap our GV and Ting numbers so that we don't lose either number. My understanding is that I am going to need a 3rd Ting phone to ensure that we don't lose either number?  I would port Ting # on phone A to phone C, when that is ported, port GV # to phone A and then port phone C# to GV. Then rinse and repeat for phone B.

Is this correct or is there a more simple way to do this?

  • I'm curious whether this ended up working for you. I have a number on Google Voice which I'd like to have be my primary number, and one on Ting which I'd like to swap over to GV. My plan is to get a second phone, port the current GV number to the new phone, and then port the current Ting number to Ting. I hear that porting to and from GV can take several days, which is not a problem for me. If anybody has tried this, or any Ting reps can confirm that this would work, I'd appreciate it!

  • Hey Jesse!  First of all, apologies to Brandon that we seem to have missed his original message.  But to your current point - you can port your GV number to a new phone, sure, and then port your Ting number to GV, which would then deactivate your old phone.  It does take 7 days to transfer a GV number to Ting - it works like a landline.  But there's no reason it wouldn't work if all the number transfer information is entered correctly.

  • I think it ended up taking about 5 days for me to port from GV to Ting, I think I missed about 3-4 of phonecalls/text messages during that time. I would HIGHLY recommend calling Ting when you decide to do it and explain what you would like to do - they are very helpful!

  • Hello again! I have successfully ported my google voice number to my new Ting phone. Now I'd like to port the old Ting number over to GV. I have two questions.

    (1) The GV porting page says "Your mobile phone service plan will be terminated when you port your number to Google Voice and your carrier may charge you an early termination fee." I have two phones on Ting which I do not want to have cancelled. The only service which will actually be terminated by this process is the number of the phone I'm porting to GV, right?

    (2) The GV porting page thinks I am a Spring customer, and wants an account number. I can't find this number in my Ting bills. Can you tell me which number I should provide, or where to find it?

    Thanks!!!

  • Hey Jesse!  If you transfer your number to GV, your phone will deactivate, but that's what you want, as I understand it, so that's great.  (GV doesn't know that, so they're just warning you.)  Your PIN is different for each phone in your account - so if you go to Device Settings, click the phone number you're moving, and look under the picture of the phone for your MSL (a six-digit number).  That's the PIN!
