Port from Verizon to GV or Ting?

I have a Ting account and phone (Nexus 5) and I'm ready to pull the trigger and port my Verizon number over and close my Verizon account. I presently use GV with Verizon but not as my main number. Mostly I just give out my Verizon number to others. I use GV for voice mail and would like to use it for text messages (which are so infrequent for me that even at the lowest level, they are pretty expensive on a message by message basis.)

I'm wondering now if I should port my Verizon number to GV or to Ting. As I understand it, if I port to GV, my calls will ring through to my Ting number and all texts can be handled by GV. I did read about some difficulties with GV in another post but I suppose that was not the normal situation other there would have been some "me too" replies.

I did check https://www.google.com/voice/b/0/porting and my Verizon number can be ported to GV.

What are the things I should be considering when making the decision whether to port to GV or to Ting?

If I port my Verizon number to GV, will I lose my present GV number or will that continue to work?

Thanks!

  • Hi Hank!

Great news that you're coming over to Ting.  It won't make much difference functionality-wise, but if you transfer your current number to Google Voice, you'll need a new Ting number in order to have an active phone, but if you bring your current number straight to Ting, you'll have both of the same current numbers you have now. As mentioned here, If you transfer your current number to Google Voice, you will have your current GV number for 90 days, or you can pay a fee to keep it permanently.  If you have any questions or need any help, please get in touch

  • Hi Renny,

Thanks for the info. I think I will port my Verizon number to Ting. As far as coming over to Ting, I've been here for a couple weeks now. (Couldn't wait. ;) ) What is the process to port my number to Ting after I have opened an account? (I haven't given out my new Ting number so it does not matter that I will lose it.)

    Thanks!

  • Hi Hank, we're happy to help!  In Device Settings, under the picture of your phone, there's a link under Actions to "Port a number to this device".  Check out the guide for the process  https://help.ting.com/entries/40874473-Porting-a-Number-to-an-Active-Device.  We're happy to help if you have questions.

  • Thanks Marty. I've started the process. I had to deactivate and reactivate/port so I'm down to one phone. I guess at some point that will transition from my old one on Verizon to the new one on Ting.
