Google Voice and Hangouts Dialer Away from Home

In the spirit of making the most of Google's wifi call capabilities, I have a general question about how to set things up. Hoping someone has a suggestion.

I see when I am home and on WiFi I should allow my GV number to ring through to the Hangouts application. So far so good. But when I leave the house, either running errands or just driving in my car, wouldn't I need to forward GV to my cell in order to receive calls? But if I leave it always forwarding then when I am back home the incoming call rings on both Hangouts and the cell, with the cell taking priority and stepping on Hangouts. It'd be nice if the Hangouts app was smart enough to know if I am on WiFi but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Without changing my GV forwarding setting every time I leave, how can I have my cake and eat it too?

  • I looked back into the advanced settings in GV. Seems I can only schedule times when it forwards to various phones .

  • Hey Rob,

Although I don't have direct experience using this hack I found a helpful article from our friends at lifehacker that outlines how you can use your GPS location to determine which device rings.

It requires you to purchase an app ($10), but it may be worth it so that you can change the settings as soon as your not at your home location :)

Check out the article here: http://lifehacker.com/5479070/synchronize-google-voice-with-your-gps-location

  • Thanks, Kyra, for the link. I've been reading up on this and it seems that since inbound calls from GV can ring through to Hangouts on both WiFi and data it isn't a setting that seems like it would be obviously needed. For me, I would prefer to make and receive calls over WiFi when it is available and using my call minutes when away - never data minutes. But that could just be me.

I'll check out the apps referenced in the post but it seems I might just have to rough it with manual switching for now.

  • I suggest forward no answer your Ting number to GV. Then when you are in Wifi just dont answer the call until it rings on your GV. Thats what I do. Alternatively if you sign into GV from Chrome browser it has lots of rules that can help with this sort of thing. It will take some experimentation to get it correct though.

  • Gee, I appreciate the suggestions. Forwarding the Ting number to GV just compounds the issue which is that I get two rings while at home on WIFI. First is usually the GV app ringing. After a couple of seconds the regular call comes in. On the screen, the incoming call panel trumps the GV app, making it difficult to answer the call as a GV call unless I happen to answer the phone immediately.

Regarding the various rules when accessing GV from Chrome, I've seen lots of settings but nothing quite like what I am looking for.

  • Rob with "forward no answer" of your Ting number to GV you only get one ring at a time since the forward does not happen unless you dont answer the first ring attempt at the Ting number. This guarantees its a wifi call if you wait for the GV ring while connected to wifi, if not it will use data. A regular forwarding will ring both at the same time.

  • Gee, I am talking about the other way around, where I forward my GV number to my Ting phone so that I can receive GV calls when away from wifi.

    Your solution works if
    1. I want all calls to go through GV
    2. GV calls are not forwarded to ting
