Sprint IPhone 5S on Ting GSM?
Answered

My wife has a Sprint Iphone 5S currently on Ting's CDMA Service. I am wondering if it is possible to switch that to the GSM service. I realize the phone would have to be unlocked by Sprint, but other than that hurtle can it be done? Also once unlocked can the phone be used on CDMA in the future if needed or would it only be GSM at that point?

  • The requirements for Ting GSM are at https://help.ting.com/entries/105240696-Can-I-Bring-My-GSM-Device-to-Ting-Compatibility-and-Unlocking-Guide

    Apple's specs are at https://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/specs/

I believe you have Model A1533 (CDMA). Once unlocked, you should get 2G voice & text, 3G, & 4G LTE. Theoretically, you should be able to bring it back to Ting CDMA. You would need a Ting X1 SIM for GSM.

You must be sure Sprint will unlock the phone and it is successfully unlocked before you try leaving Ting. You do not want to be in the position where the phone left Ting CDMA, does not work on Ting GSM, and cannot return to Ting CDMA.

  • The Sprint iPhone 5s is actually A1453, but Bruce is right that it will work fine with Ting GSM. The unlock type you'll need is Domestic SIM Unlock (DSU).

Contact Ting and ask them to double-check on coming back to CDMA before you deactivate that side of it. There's no technical reason it could not come back, but there may be some paperwork or significant delays involved because of Sprint's broken financial eligibility screening on CDMA activations, and Ting can let you know if there would be any issues.
