Virgin Mobile iPhone 5S compatibility with Ting?
Answered

A little over a year ago, my wife bought an iPhone 5S from Virgin Mobile. I'd like to move the 5S to Ting. The BYOD compatibility checker says the 5S is compatible on Ting CDMA, based on the phone's MEID number.

I know I would need to get the 5S SIM slot unlocked by Virgin Mobile. Assuming I can do this successfully, does anyone know of a reason why the iPhone would or would not activate with a Ting CDMA SIM card?

  • For ting CDMA, SIM unlocking is not the issue. CDMA networks are locked by individual devices. The question is would Sprint allow the Virgin Mobile phone to come to Ting?

Sprint's current rules are complex. Call or chat with ting support for an official answer.

The Ting CDMA SIMs are the same as Sprint SIMs. Only Ting GSM SIMs are unique to Ting.

  • Ive just moved my Virgin Mobile IPhone 4S to Ting as it passed the ESN check. And the best thing they were able to unlock the sim slot so it can accept international sim cards. I believe that once you have had the 5S for a year the phone can have a domestic sim unlock which means that any SIM can be used in the phone.

  • Thanks for the correct information, Bruce Osborne. Once I found our (hidden) Virgin Mobile account number, the 5S Virgin phone number was quickly ported to Ting. It was not necessary to unlock or change the SIM card as both Virgin and Ting use the same CDMA Sprint network.
