Anyone else having voice & data connectivity issues with their Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3?
Answered

I've only had my Idol 3 on Ting GSM for a couple days and haven't really traveled with it yet, but I've noticed that it is constantly going in and out of service, from 4-5 bars one moment to 0 the next. I'm trying to figure out if it's a phone issue or a service issue in my area. I'm in a GSM - 4G LTE area according to the coverage map, and I get the LTE icon on the Idol 3.

It doesn't seem to be a "death grip" issue, I've seen it happen when holding it only by the bottom two corners. When it gets stuck on no-service, going in and out of airplane mode brings it back, if only temporarily.

Anyone else on Ting GSM have an Idol 3 yet? If so, what have been your experiences? I've had nothing but great luck on Ting CDMA, and love the service as a whole.

Thanks!

  • Yes I am having the same issue, very frustrating. So far, it's day to day. Whenever I restart my Idol 3 The signal is intermittent. Seems like an unusually long time to find a signal. Overall not getting a very strong signal, whereas my wife's Amazon Fire Phone is getting great signal. Not sure if it's the phone or the service. I love the phone on wifi.

  • Have you tried setting your phone to IPv4 Only or IPv6 Only? Many people have had issues with the IPv4/IPv6 setting that is default on many phones.

  • I created a new APN according to the Ting instructions, with v6 for data and v4 for MMS. I haven't tried changing it to v4.

However, I turned off LTE (by switching to HSPA/UMTS/GSM rather than LTE/HSPA/UMTS/GSM) and the problem seems to have gone away.

    APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
    APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6

  • Haven't used it much on data but voice keeps going in and out. I go from no bars to two bars to full strength to emergency calls only. I didn't notice it much at first, but now it seems to happen all the time.

  • I bought my wife this phone and it has the same problem. Great phone but the intermittent connections are getting tiresome. Ting, can you help? Thanks,

  • I found two ways to fix it:

    1.) Turn off LTE, or
2.) Change APN settings to IPv4 only

  • Also can confirm I'm having these problems. Talking with Ting CS, they thought it was a SIM issue. Obviously now that I see this conversation, that's very unlikely.

Changing the preferred network mode to WCDMA/GSM auto fixes the connectivity problem, but you're stuck without LTE (HSPA+ at most).

I haven't tried the IPv4/IPv6 fix yet, but will update if I find out more.

  • The problem isn't strictly related to Ting it seems (http://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/help/cellular-call-signal-drops-off-wifi-t3125846). So far, my brief test of turning off the wifi seems to prevent the signal from dropping out. I'm sincerely hoping that a firmware update can fix this...

  • I just took my Idol 3 into the Cricket store yesterday. The guy there told me it's a known problem with the earlier Idol 3s that there is an internal antenna problem. I called customer service and they are sending me a new one for free. I would drop calls and have no signal for hours. It's worth checking out.
