Help Please -- Google Hangout for Wifi Calling :<

Hi! I'm totally lost on how to utilize Google Hangout for Wifi calling. I want this in particular for calling family members so that the minute usage doesn't double up when calling each other. I have google voice numbers, google hangout/voice/dialer on all the phones. I tried testing it out, but I haven't been successful and just eating up my Ting minutes. Can someone please walk me through this? Thanks!

  • Bruce, perhaps I didn't state it clearly but I have all 3 different apps/plug ins--Hangout, Google Voice, and Hangout Dialer plugin as well. I have read through the guide but it does not offer me any new insight. I have changed the settings so that any calls to the GVoice number are not forwarded to the mobile number.

I did another test call where the caller and the receiver answered dialed/answered through the Hangout app but I was still charged for the minutes.

Does anyone else have any insight? If you do use Hangout amongst family members is there any charge that is on the Ting account? My understanding is that it should be FREE if you go through the hangout, for both caller and receiver if they are using Hangout.

  • Jina, what happens if you disable minutes via Ting and try to make/receive calls from the Hangouts dialer? If you're eating up minutes via Ting, that sounds like it's not using Hangouts for Wi-Fi calling.

I would also try removing the GV app and not doing any forwarding, etc. via your Ting number. I can tell you that I use Hangouts exclusively for calls, though this is all done over a data connection whether that's via Ting or on Wi-Fi.
