Porting Ting to GV

First, I am a gadget geek. I may be playing with several devices at once. Now I have a CDMA and a GSM ting device. I like the GSM as it has LTE in my town where CDMA does not. However, coverage is poor at work and at home.

What I am considering doing is porting my primary number to Google Voice and having it handle voicemail and forwarding to whatever devices I want. As long a GV stays running I get to keep my primary number and individual devices do not matter anymore. Plus I can use the GV Dialer for VOIP calls I suppose while on wifi, but that is of secondary importance.

Does this plan sound logical? If so, has anyone worked with google to port in a number? How long should I expect to be without a working primary number? Obviously, since I am on Ting, I do not have a contract to worry about when the number gets ported, I just have to reactivate the device with a new number.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

  • FYI for those interested. I went ahead and started the port. However, the number I want to port out is on a Ting GSM phone. In the GV porting steps it asked me for my T-Mo account info (number, etc). I entered my Ting info instead. We will see if it works.

  • William, how did it go? I'm thinking about making my long-time cell phone number a GV number. Did you have any issues? I have a work cell phone that I can use temporarily to point my GV number to until I get my personal phone back up and running with a new number from Ting.

  • We have had customers port their numbers over to GV successfully. While we don't offer enhanced integration with this service, having forwarding set up should allow you to make use of this service as you intended. If you run into problems just let us know!
