Tethering on 1st-gen Moto G Answered

Eric Christopherson

Will WiFi or USB tethering ever be supported on the 1st-gen Moto G? I'd like that.

Do you have the Boost version of the Moto G? If you do, Boost removed tethering from it so last I heard the only way to get it is by installing a custom ROM.

Go to Settings, About Phone, System Version... look for Boost in the description.

I don't have one at all yet, but was looking at getting one (refurbished) from Ting: https://ting.com/shop/Motorola-Moto-G-Refurbished

It says there it doesn't support tethering. But I'm not afraid of rooting and/or flashing ROMs.

Assuming it's refurbished phones from Boost, installing a custom ROM will get tethering working. The same might be true for Sprint versions but I'm not sure.

More on tethering with the Boost model here, several people confirmed in the comments it works after changing ROMs.:

Call or chat with Ting support for this device-specific question.

I didn't realize before that the 1st-gen G is only 3G. I'm not so interested in it, in that case (especially for tethering!)
