Apple Upgrade Program for new iPhone 6s is not tied to a phone contract. Can Ting users benefit from it?

I'm wondering if we happy, money-saving Ting users can benefit from Apple's new program that doesn't seem to give a darn about anyone's cell phone contract. Even so, the 4 major carriers are listed as gatekeepers of sorts to one's phone reservation.

I'm just curious what Ting's response to the program is.

  • I chatted with Support, and they confirmed the following: Only the GSM or unlocked versions are compatible. So for example, a T-Mobile iPhone 6s (limited availability through the Apple Upgrade Program, depending on your proximity to an Apple Store that still offers the model and configuration you want) or an unlocked GSM iPhone 6s (which will take a few months for Apple to release) will work with Ting.

  • Hey Emily,

We don't have a plan as of yet regarding the upgrade program as we don't quite know how it's going to work.

There was a thread on Reddit that had a few ideas, but nothing we can comfortably encourage at this point.

  • Kathy,

We just found out this afternoon that an unlocked iPhone 6s/6s Plus purchased outright from Apple will be eligible to activate on Ting CDMA, as well as on Ting GSM.

I've reached out to our support team to make sure that this information is shared and everyone is brought into the know as it sounds like you may have been told differently.

In the meantime, we're trying to figure out precisely what CDMA SIM the 6s/6s Plus will require, and likely at that time we'll update our Shop.

  • Thanks, Rob. I'm at the Apple Store now, wanting to buy an iPhone 6s and sign up for the Apple Upgrade (lease) Program. I just got off the phone with Mike in Ting Support, and he confirmed that Ting users cannot participate in the Apple Upgrade program. I need to buy the phone at full price. Arghhh...! If this changes in the next 24 hours, please let me know! (The Sprint system happens to be down right now, so Apple is holding my phone until tomorrow when we can try again.)

  • I am interested in using the iPhone 6s+ on Ting GSM. Ideally it would be possible to do this through the upgrade program, as $750 upfront is steep.

What would be wrong with signing up for the upgrade program through, say, T-Mobile, then dropping that service after 40 days and coming to Ting? Would that be possible?
