Please make MMS work even when I am connected to wifi, or at least mention it in the "getting started" docs

I was disappointed to learn from Customer Support that MMS messages won't work while my phone is connected to wifi. I am already using google hangouts for texts and I don't want to switch to "textra"; nor do I want to turn off my wifi and reboot my phone every time I get an MMS message. With my old provider, Ptel, MMS messages came through just fine whether I was connected to wifi or not.

Ting, could you please fix this bug and make MMS messages work while I am connected to wifi?
If you can't do that, then could you please explain in your "getting started" docs that MMS does not work while connected to wifi, so that your customers know about the bug and know the turn-off-wifi-and-reboot-phone workaround?

  • Whether or not MMS works on Wi-Fi is dependent on your MMS app.
Google Hangouts, for instance will use Wi-Fi, but not if cellular data is disabled on the handset. If data is disabled, even if the phone is inactive, Google apps see no Internet connection. I have see this with Google Play and Google Hangouts. I have not tested, but assume this applies to all Google apps.

  • Does anyone know what settings need to be active for Textra to send/recieve MMS messages?

  • Drew called in today and asked me to add his voice to this request.  Since this is the only thing for which he uses mobile data, he feels it is unfair that he charged for the message that comes in and the data to download the attachment, feeling this is a double billing.   He would like to see either this capability added to our services or our system be adjusted that the MMS data usage doesn't count toward usage totals.

  • This could be mentioned as a possible issue in the getting started documents, but the behavior is dependent on the device.app used.

Ting has no control over that, so they cannot adjust the data usage. The network partners still charge Ting for the usage. If they credited it, Ting would need to raise their rates to cover these "hidden charges.

I believe Ting has said they will not have hidden charges.
