Cellular Network is Unavailable

My wife and I just brought three phones over from Sprint.  Two of which are Nexus 5x.  We had no problems with the phones before switching. Now however when we go to use the phones we are frequently having signal drops and when we go to dial we get the message "Cellular Network is Unavailable".  I already tried resetting activation on the network which didn't do anything. Thanks.

  • Hey Matthew, can you give this a try and see if it works:

On both phones, can you go to Settings -> More -> Cellular Networks -> System Select -> set to Home Only.

Then turn both phones off for about 30 seconds, and then on again.

    Then on both phones:

    1. Open the phone dialer
    2. Enter the code *# *# 72786 #* #* (that's STAR-POUND-STAR-POUND 72786 POUND-STAR-POUND-STAR)
    3. Phone will restart and will indicate that it's activating and that it may take up to 5 minutes

Once the phones indicate that they've activated successfully, check to see if the issue is fixed! Let me know!

  • Yes I already tried this. That's what I was trying to say by resetting activation. Thanks.

  • Just to confirm, had you tried this after setting the phone to Home Only? Did it still not work after that? Let me know! If so, I will need to send you an e-mail since we'll want to take a closer look at your account.

  • Okay, I wasn't told about the Home Only part. I'm trying it now.

  • Thanks! Should I keep it set to Home Only? Actually what are the ideal settings in there? Is Preferred Network LTE or Global?

  • Home Only is ideal unless you find yourself in an area with absolutely no signal at all! Then it's good to pop onto Automatic so you can use the roaming towers. Having the phone on Automatic on all the time means the phone will bounce between Sprint towers and roaming towers depending on which signal it likes better, and it's the constant switching that can cause problems.

Home Only will use LTE or 3G as needed, depending on what signal is available in the area. Global, meanwhile, isn't really something you need to worry about when using a Sprint phone in an area with Sprint signal.

  • I hate to say it but the problem still exists. Also wifi shuts off randomly.

  • Hm, if wi-fi's shutting off randomly, there could be something going on with the phone's software. Have you already tried a factory reset on the phone yet? That may be something we'll want to try.

Have you found your third phone is having issues as well, or has it just been the 5xs?

  • I haven't been able to see the Galaxy S4 yet. I will try this later.
