Looking for a GSM device with Wi-Fi calling feature
Answered

I need to update my phone. It has too little memory even without any additional apps and with micro SD card installed. The problem is, I need the Wi-Fi calling option available. I would like an android smartphone with 16GB of storage. Currently, there is only one phone with that option listed in the Ting shop, but it has only 8GB. Is it possible that other phones have it but it is not listed on the website? Did anyone buy a phone recently from the Ting shop and had the Wi-Fi calling installed on it? I don't want to go to T-mobile to buy a phone. It seems that getting an unlocked phone is rather difficult. Many thanks in advance.

  • Hey Karolina!

The only way to get a device that has the ability of WiFi calling would have to be an Android, Windows, or Blackberry device coming directly from T-Mobile. If you are purchasing the phone from us.. it's really hit or miss that the feature will actually work as it's not something that's officially supported (we can't guarantee it will work). My suggestion is that you look to a 3rd party for a cheaper T-Mobile device that you would be able to bring over.

  • I've had good luck buying on Ebay.  Search for used T-mo phones.  Any decent smart phones probably have wifi calling.  A few listings will give the IMEI to double check compatibility (sometimes it shows up in the pictures...).  If they don't show it, sometimes they'll provide it if you ask.  Worst case, so long as the listing clearly states something like "clean IMEI", you can make a good case to return it if it can't be activated..

We've used T-mo branded galaxy S3, S4, and S5 as well as LG G2 phones which all had wifi calling.

  • Hi Jamie,

Thanks for your advice.  I would really prefer to purchase directly from Ting to make sure the phone will work on the network.  Also, I was hoping to avoid the time imposed by T-mobile to unlock a new device.  However, it might be a small price to pay if I get a phone with the needed features.

    Thank  you.

  • Hi Jon,

I appreciate you sharing your ebay experience.  It sounds like a good option.  I will have to investigate and see what is available.  I also appreciate the tips of what to look for when purchasing a used phone.

    Thanks,

    Karolina
