Texting iCloud account from Google Hangouts

Hi! My husband and I have Ting a account that we use for cellular access only. We ported our phone numbers to Google Voice, which means we use Google Hangouts for phone and texting. It's been a great way to keep our phone bill down because we're not paying for minutes and texts, only data (which is actually cheaper).

We'd like to add our son onto our Ting account using the same set-up. However, the only people he needs to text right now are us (which will work fine)...and his best friend, who uses an iCloud account on WiFi only. (Meaning he doesn't have a phone number.)

It looks like you can't text an iCloud account from Hangouts. Is that correct? If so, is there some sort of workaround? We'd hate to pay to get him onto our Ting account and then he can't use the phone to text his best friend. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • Hey Linda,

There isn't a way to use iMessage or iCloud on a device that isn't an Apple device. There's no good workaround except getting an Apple device that can access iMessage and iCloud.

If the friend can use Hangouts on WiFi, that would work just like it would with you and your husband.

Apple places restrictions on what devices can access iMessage and iCloud, and they're unlikely to lift those restrictions, despite there being a real market for it.

  • Thanks for letting me know, Mitch! That's a bummer. I'll see if his friend's parents will let him get the Hangouts app so they can still text if we add our son to the Ting account.

  • Oh, by the way they are all iPhones that we have, but we don't use iMessage. I'm sure that doesn't make a difference in your reply but thought I'd mention that just in case

  • If his best friend has an iPod or iPad, they could communicate right now, if your son has an iPhone.

Just head into Messages and compose a new message to the best friend using the friend's iCloud ID (also known as an AppleID), rather than a phone number. If the message shows up blue, they can talk without the friend installing Hangouts.

This is using iMessage, but iMessages travel over data or WiFi as long as the message is blue. You could experiment with this, as well, but you wouldn't be able to use your Google Voice phone numbers. You'd have to use your Apple IDs.

  • Sorry for the delay! Yes, that does make sense...we'll have to test it out. My son is using his iCloud account right now to text his friend, so we'll just need to disable texting from the Ting number and ensure that the messages are blue. Thanks!
