eSIM support

While the Spring/T-Mobile merger is on everyone's mind, this is not about that…at least not directly. Rather this is about using the current Spring and T-Mobile networks as needed to get the best performance for my single device. eSIM support would provide me with the ability to switch between the Spring and T-Mobile networks as I needed to for performance. For example, Sprint has areas around me that give better data performance than T-Mobile. So I would typically be on that network. However, there are places where I go where Sprint offers zero coverage and Ting moves me to the Verizon network for voice and ancient SMS texting–reducing my smartphone to basically a flip phone.

eSIM support would provide me with the ability–I think–to switch from Sprint to T-Mobile when I get outside of the Sprint coverage. Now, I'm sure that Verizon wouldn't like that, but I really don't care. What I do care about is that I get a better experience on Ting.

  • eSIM support is near the top of our list. We're working through some previously unforeseen hurdles on that front. Once those are clear, and as soon as something changes on that front, we'll announce it.

  • Does Ting support eSIM now? Especially given that the new iPhone is selling it a key selling feature starting yesterday!

  • We do not support eSIM at this time. We want to, badly. But we need approval from several different entities, as we do not own our own towers. These entities have not given their approval to us or any other MVNO for eSIM, so it's not supported. Once we get approval from these companies, we hope to be able to offer it.

We're working on it, but I would not buy the new iPhone expecting to be able to use the eSIM portion with Ting. You'll be waiting for a long time.

  • What's the hold up on eSIM? I'd like to use the new Pixel 3 on Ting, and it only has eSIM. There's no physical SIM option as far as I can tell. Any timeline for eSIM on Ting yet?

  • Hey Josh,

We're in a holding pattern on eSIM with no news to report. The entities I referred to earlier have still not given their approval. Until they do, we cannot provide eSIM services.

But we're in the same boat as every other MVNO, though. Until the keyholders give their thumbs up, we can run tests on eSIM (like we have with another Tucows brand, AOW) but cannot offer it to Ting customers.

Our fearless leader notes on the blog the importance of eSIM to Ting customers, and to the industry as a whole. We absolutely hear you and absolutely want to get this to you guys ASAP.

The Pixel 3 does still have a physical SIM slot. It's at the bottom, near the USB-C port. You will still be able to use the Pixel 3 on Ting with either our GSM or CDMA SIMs. We're just waiting to hear back on which CDMA SIM card it uses.

  • I gather from the lack of news to the contrary that ting is still in a holding pattern on e-sim. I don't know if there's any way to predict this, but for current (sim based) ting customers, do you anticipate that they would be able to convert their sims to e-sims and keep their numbers?

  • Hi Conor,

You're right that there is no way for us to know for sure at the moment but we do theorize that when we have the ability to use eSIMs that one would be able to move their number from their current SIM to the eSIM.  We'll have more information though when we have more movement with eSIMs.

  • Hi, what's the status of Ting's support of ESIM?

  • Hey James,

Right now there is no new news about it I'm afraid. It is something that is being worked on but there are no plans to introduce it in 2019 because we don't want to release it until it works as intended. It's going to be a while before it is something that we are going to be able to offer to our customers.

  • Hello Ting Team,

It's been 7 months since the last update on eSIM support.  I'm thinking of upgrading my 1st Gen iPhone SE to the 2nd Gen SE that supports eSIM. Any news?

  • There are no new updates, other than to say that 2020 is unlikely for eSIM support on Ting. You should not buy the new iPhone SE if you're expecting to use its eSIM capabilities on Ting. You'll have to rely on the physical SIM for the time-being.

If you'd like to read a little bit more about why, a product manager posted in a thread on Reddit about this recently: https://www.reddit.com/r/ting/comments/g38h4q/any_hope_at_all_for_esim_in_2020/fnq95xv/
