Estimates on the current usage page

It'd be neat if the Current Usage page on the website also showed an estimate of how much usage I'll have by the end of the current billing cycle, based on the usage so far this cycle. E.g. if it's 7 days into a 30-day cycle and I've used 24 minutes of talk time, then on average I'd expect to use about 102 minutes by the end of the cycle. Obviously the estimate can only be based on existing data and can't predict the future, but it'd be nice to know what I'm on track to use (and what that would cost me if I hit that estimate).

It might make sense to only have the estimate appear once there's at least 5-7 days of the cycle passed, to avoid insufficient data giving wildly inaccurate estimates. For example, if I normally use very little data on weekdays and a lot on weekends, then if the first day of the cycle is a weekend, after 1 day it would give me a monthly data estimate based on that one high-usage day, which could be very misleading—e.g. if I typically use 200 MB per weekend day and 20 MB per weekday, it might tell me I'm on track to use ~6 GB when in reality I typically use ~2 GB per month).

I realize that having the estimates there might confuse some users, so it might be reasonable to bury it further down or behind a link so that you only see it if you actively seek it out. Thanks!

  • Hey Matthew,

We do also have an Estimated Bill feature at the top of the front page of your dashboard which does a pretty good job at extrapolating your current usage through your billing date. It isn't going to be as helpful as setting a cap or alert on the account but will give you an idea of where you will end up.

  • Hey Christian. Do you mean the lime green "Your current bill is $X and closes on Y" thing? Yeah, I take a look at that each time to know how much I would owe if the period ended now, but it's really the extrapolation I'm looking for. I mean obviously I can math, but it'd be nice if the usage page did that for us.

  • Christian,

Where is the "Estimated Bill" thing located? I don't see it. Maybe show us a screenshot.

  • Hey David,

Good call on the screenshot as it can be easy to miss. From Current usage in your account, there would be a toggle in the top right to choose from current or estimated:

  • Huh. I'm looking at my current usage page right now and there's no "Current" or "Estimated" links in the upper right like in your screenshot:

  • Hey Matthew,

You're likely too early in the 30-day billing cycle for the estimate option to populate but it will once there is enough of a sample size to generate a reasonably accurate estimate of the final totals.

  • Ah ok. So in other words, this feature already exists exactly how I was expecting it to be. ;) Thanks!

  • Thanks, Christian. I see where it should be...or will, later in the billing cycle. Interesting that I've never seen it before. Makes me think of the other recent post complaining about the hard-to-see light blue color...
