SIM Card Error Invalid SIM Card

Over the last week April 22-27 2019 there was a substantial Cell Phone Update for both my Samsung S8+ and my husbands Moto G6.

We both received a message that our SIM cards were invalid and we were unable to make calls following the update.

I removed the SIM cards from each phone and checked for dust (although there wasn't any) and reinserted the SIM for each phone.  That fixed it for some reason.

I just wanted to share in case anyone else had this error.  If happened right after the update.  If it happened to the two of us it may be a big issue from the update.  I hope this helps someone.

  • Hi Sheila,

Thanks for reaching out and letting us know. I haven't heard of anyone else coming across this issue but I'll pass it along to our other customer service representatives here in case they run into anything.

Hope you have a great rest of the day and thanks for taking the time to share this.

  • My wifes Moto G6 plus on CDMA had this happen in past reboot of phone always solved it.

For last few days after reboot it would make and receive calls for 5 to 10 minutes, after that the alert invalid sim.   Removing and cleaning sim didn't help.   Ting had me do some resets if various settings.  No help.   I did a full factory reset no change.

Had a spare GSM sim from Ting swapped it in phone,   Shows it was connected to network but never came back with bad sim. I went ahead and ported the number to the GSM sim.   Its been several hours and no issues.   Hoping that solved it.

  • Hey Doug,

Keep us updated if the problem comes back. Usually, if the issue is on the network side it would continue even after a new SIM card is added so it might just have been how the SIM was connecting to the phone. It's hard to tell but if it comes back let us know.

  • I got my new Ting sum card. Inserted it and it says invalid. Tired for 6 hours to get through to customer service, always large call volume because of freedom pop customers. So why did Ting not hire more customer service reps? My phone is not working, and I cannot get help, does not instill any kind of trust or expectancy of great service as advertised.

  • Hey Jerry,

We did hire more reps for this. The volume is above and beyond what even our additional workforce can handle in a timely fashion right now. We're trying to get back to normal, but in the meantime, there's going to be a wait for a response.

Did you activate the SIM card at ting.com/activate yet? And if so, what's the exact error message? I can help you track down what the problem probably is without you having to wait for a response.

  • I've been getting the invalid SIM card error. I've restarted my phone twice and I've taken the Sim card out twice and dusted it. I've noticed as I've inserted the Sim card back in it's not secure. Is it the Sim card or my Motorola? Please help. I can't make any phone calls.

  • Hi Spring,

There could be a few different reasons that the SIM card is giving this error to the phone. It might be the way that the SIM is sitting in the SIM tray which you may just need to order a new tray (or if you know someone with the same phone as you, you could test their tray in your phone to see if that fixes the situation before going out to get your own) to fix. Before you look into that though I would suggest running through our troubleshooting guide just to eliminate anything that may be on the software side.
